The Nokia X7, also known as the Nokia 7.1 Plus, is now official, and it looks like an incredible handset for the asking price.

Nokia 7.1 Plus (Nokia X7)
TL;DR
  • HMD Global has unveiled the Nokia X7 in China.
  • The 6.2-inch, midrange smartphone comes with impressive hardware considering its price.
  • It’s going on sale in China later this month, but it’s likely to come to the global market also.

HMD Global has launched the Nokia X7, also referred to as the Nokia 7.1 Plus, in China. With a greater-than-6-inch display, the new mid-range smartphone is one of HMD Global’s biggest yet, and it packs some compelling features for the asking price.

The X7 will ship with a 6.18-inch, FHD+, PureView display with 18.7:9 aspect ratio, Snapdragon 710 chip, 4GB or 6GB of RAM (LPPDDR4x), and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage (plus microSD card support up to 400GB).

There’s also a 12MP + 13MP dual camera setup on the back, packing 1.4µm pixels, OIS, and dual LED flash (it should handle well in low-light and portrait shots). The front camera comes in at 20MP.

The X7 is powered by a 3,500 mAh battery with 18W fast charging support and runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box (though an upgrade to Android Pie has been promised). The dimensions come in at 154.8 x 75.76 x 7.97mm dimensions, it weighs 178g, and it includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.

While the above is in line with rumors we’d heard, one new detail comes as a welcome surprise. The X7 price starts at 1,699 yuan, and every storage variation arrives below the 2699 yuan (~$390) price tag we’d expected. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 4GB RAM/64GB ROM: 1,699 yuan (~$245)
  • 6GB RAM/64GB ROM: 1,999 yuan (~$290)
  • 6GB RAM/128GB ROM: 2499 yuan (~$360)

With the Nokia 7.1 arriving this month for $349 in the U.S., the X7 looks like a bargain. Though we can’t compare U.S. and China prices like-for-like, the Nokia 7.1 has weaker specs, so if the 7.1 Plus costs anywhere similar it could make for a great deal.

HMD Global has put the X7 up for pre-order in China now and it will be released next week in blue, red, silver, and black. You’ll only find it in China for the moment, but there’s light on the horizon — the Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 Plus both made it to global territories and were also based on Nokia X models. The X7 is likely to make its way to other regions as the Nokia 7.1 Plus in future.
