TL;DR
  • Netflix prices for United States and Canada customers just went up.
  • The new pricing starts immediately and raises prices by $1 to $2.
  • Netflix says the hike will allow it to “continue to offer a wide variety of quality entertainment options.”

In the United States and Canada, Netflix hasn’t increased its pricing since October 2020. Now, according to Netflix’s pricing page, it appears the company is ready to end its streak.

Starting today, Netflix prices in the US and Canada are going up by $1 to $2, depending on the plan. These increases affect both new and current subscribers.

Speaking with Reuters, Netflix said the increase in pricing will allow it to “continue to offer a wide variety of quality entertainment options.”

New US Netflix prices for 2022

  • Premium: $19.99 each month ($2 increase)
  • Standard: $15.49 each month ($1.50 increase)
  • Basic: $9.99 each month ($1 increase)

Meanwhile, in Canada, the Premium plan is now $20.99 ($2 increase) and the Standard plan is $16.49 ($1.50 increase). The Canadian Basic plan was unchanged at $9.99.

It’s no secret that Netflix is facing more competition than ever in the streaming space. Between the overwhelming (and somewhat surprising) successes of Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus, Netflix has been having a tough time gaining new subscribers. The easiest solution to that problem is to increase Netflix pricing across the board for a quick injection of cash.

Generally, Netflix doesn’t drop pricing after increasing it. So these prices will likely be permanent.

Netflix has 74 million subscribers in the United States and Canada as of September 2021. The two areas combined make for the company’s largest region.
