Netflix caused a stir over the weekend when it announced that it would be instituting a price hike in Canada and the US. The price increase means that US customers in particular will now pay $9.99 a month for the basic tier, $15.49 for the standard package, and $19.99 for the top-end option.

We wondered just how many people would be annoyed enough by the price hike to actually cancel their subscriptions, so we posed this question on Monday. Here’s how you voted in this poll.

Do you plan to cancel Netflix after North American price hike?

Results

Over 1,200 votes were counted as of writing, and it turns out that close to half of all respondents said they indeed planned to cancel their Netflix subscriptions.

Meanwhile, 36% of polled readers say they don’t plan to cancel their Netflix subscriptions after this price hike. Aside from the obvious reason that these voters might be happy with the content and price they’re paying, one reader comment notes that their carrier pays for their plan.

Finally, 15% of respondents said they had already canceled Netflix prior to the price hike. One reader noted that they previously canceled their account in favor of the ESPN, Hulu, and Disney Plus bundle, citing a desire for new content and earlier Netflix price hikes.

In other words, almost 65% of polled readers say they plan to cancel their Netflix account due to this price hike or have canceled it prior to the increase.

Comments

  • Timothy: The only reason I have Netflix currently, is because T-Mobile pays for 95% of it. Otherwise, I would’ve cancelled long ago.
  • mejustsayin: as soon as I saw an article about the increase, I went to netflix to cancel my account. I hope enough people cancel making the price inrease worthless.
  • Techngro: I plan to continue sharing my sister’s Netflix account. And torrenting the shows I want to watch so I don’t have to give Netflix clicks and views.
  • T_Dizzle: I came to the article for the comments and there are none, lol. I canceled netflix for hulu, espn+ and disney bundle. I needed new content and the price increases, in the past, were enough to make it happen.
  • Japes: I think more people are saying will cancel than actually will. So yeah I’m sure they’ll lose a few. But in the end they do add a lot of content and you can usually find something to watch. The streaming services are all adding up though.
