The Motorola One Power seems to offer plenty of bang for your budget buck, in stark contrast to the Moto G6 Plus...

A look at the Motorola One Power from a couple of angles.
TL;DR
  • The Motorola One Power has been announced for India, with a 15,999 rupee price tag.
  • Motorola’s phone packs a Snapdragon 636 chipset, a 16MP+5MP rear camera pairing, and a 5,000mAh battery.
  • The phone will be available via Flipkart from October 5.

The Motorola One Power was announced only late last month, but Indian users won’t have to wait too long to get their hands on the device. The company held an event for the phone today (September 24), confirming an October 5 launch date.

The phone is the first Android One Motorola device to land in India, according to the company. So that means a lightweight take on Android, upgrades to Android Pie and Q, and security updates for three years. In fact, a Google representative at the Indian launch said Android Pie would be coming to the device “as soon as October, and going forward.”

For 15,999 rupees (~$220), you’re getting a phone with a Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, a 6.2-inch full HD+ notched display, and a 5,000mAh battery with fast charging. The battery size is particularly impressive, coming in much larger than the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (4,000mAh) and HUAWEI P20 Pro (4,000mAh).

In the photography department, the Motorola One Power packs a 16MP+5MP (f/1.8 and f/2.2 respectively) rear camera combination and a 12MP f/2.0 selfie shooter. Both the front and rear cameras are capable of producing the ever-popular bokeh effects too.

The Motorola One Power will be available from Flipkart, but you’ll need to wait for a flash sale at midday on October 5 to buy it. Hopefully, the company foregoes the flash sale tomfoolery sooner rather than later, so everyone can actually get it.

All in all, the new phone seems to provide solid value for money in a competitive market for budget phones. But Motorola will have an uphill battle on its hands, as Xiaomi, Realme, Asus, Nokia, and Huawei are also duking it out in the country.

Nevertheless, I think we can all agree that the Motorola One Power looks better on paper than Lenovo’s Moto G6 Plus, which recently landed in India. The latter phone has a slightly less capable Snapdragon 630 chipset, a 12MP+5MP rear camera combo, a 16MP selfie shooter, and a much smaller 3,200mAh battery for 22,449 rupees (~$309). Sure, you’re getting 6GB of RAM and that higher resolution selfie camera, but is that really worth the premium?
