Promising superior quality sound over the lossy compression formats we’ve been dealing with for years, the marketing writes itself. Although those of you still rocking a physical CD music and FLAC collections have been ahead of the streaming game for quite some time.

OPPO announced a new Bluetooth SoC that will support 24-bit/192kHz lossless audio over the ultra-resolution lossless codec (URLC), but we won’t see this until the next-gen of OPPO flagship phones. Further, LHDC 5.0 supports 24-bit/192kHz audio at 1Mbps, but you need a phone that supports LHDC to hear this.
For those with a Hi-Res music collection or lossless streaming service, lossless playback over Bluetooth takes a bit of research to find. But with the right hardware, you can experience lossless Bluetooth audio today.
What do you need to experience lossless audio?
As we alluded to earlier, you’ll need specialized hardware to experience lossless audio over Bluetooth. Most Bluetooth audio devices don’t support LDAC and aptX Lossless codecs. If you’re paying for a lossless source, you’ll want a playback device and headphones that sport these codecs too.
If lossless audio is important to you and you’re on a budget, consider picking up a pair of wired headphones instead. A wired connection doesn’t suffer from Bluetooth’s shortcomings. It also means you don’t need to look for a specific codec while shopping for new audio gear. That said, don’t expect any pair of cheap headphones to do justice to your lossless audio collection.
Remember that if you want to playback high-resolution 24-bit/192 kHz lossless audio, you may also need an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC). This is because the hardware within many consumer devices cannot handle high sample rates. Apple, for instance, says that you’ll need a DAC to play audio files with “sample rates higher than 48 kHz.”
Is a lossless music streaming subscription worth it?

Would you pay for lossless music streaming?
Customers who listen to music in less ideal environments, such as on public transport or at the gym, won’t benefit from lossless-quality music. Likewise, the cost and data consumption aren’t worthwhile if you use a more affordable pair of earbuds as your primary listening tool.
Lossy streaming will suit all but the pickiest of audio consumers
