These Lenovo Z5 Pro camera photos look outstanding, if only we could trust them

A quadruple rear camera setup and some of the best snaps we've ever seen for the Lenovo Z5 Pro? Sounds too good to be true.

TL;DR
  • Lenovo has teased a quadruple rear camera setup for its upcoming Z5 Pro smartphone, now known as the S5 Pro.
  • The company has also shown off some photos believed to have been captured with its 2x telephoto lens.
  • The Lenovo Z5 was teased in a similar way, though the final product ended up quite different from what was seen in the marketing.

Lenovo is teasing a quadruple rear camera setup for its Z5 Pro smartphone (seen above) — though it appears to have been renamed Lenovo S5 Pro — and has even shared some supposed snaps taken with the handset. The tease arrives via recent posts from a Lenovo VP Chang Cheng on Weibo (via GSMArena), but it raises some questions.

The first of these relates to the naming convention. The phone was previously shown off with its bezel-less display as the Lenovo Z5 Pro, but we don’t know what’s behind the switch. Lenovo doesn’t have an S series, so this would be the first device to wear the badge.

As the Z5 was met with criticism following a somewhat misleading marketing campaign — based on materials Chang Cheng posted on Weibo — perhaps Lenovo is trying to avoid associating this upcoming phone with it.

The Z5 story lingers, though. Lenovo has a revealed a supposed S5 Pro camera module render, as well as shown off some supposed device photos taken with its 2x telephoto lens, and a couple of these look superb. But to what degree can we trust them?

It’s clear that the colors have been enhanced in one (or both) of the sky images — because skies don’t naturally produce such colors — but we don’t know if this is thanks to some onboard processing like HDR, or if the files have been touched-up after the fact. If it’s the latter, who knows what else may have been improved thanks to photoshop, as opposed to what’s straight from the camera.

At this point, despite having been shown a physical device already with a bezel-less screen (we didn’t get a look at its rear to confirm the four-camera system), I’d remain extremely cautious regarding the S5 Pro.

Thankfully, we don’t have long to wait to find out the full story as the phone is set to launch on October 16. Its supposed specs include a 6.5-inch QHD+ display (sans notch), Snapdragon 845 chip, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery. Its front-facing camera is also believed to be concealed inside a slide-out mechanism like on the OPPO Find X.
