Upcoming Moto X4 with dual-camera setup smiles for the camera (Update: maybe not)

An image of Lenovo's unannounced Moto X4 has popped up online, leaving little to the imagination.

Update #2, August 7: Leaker Evan Blass tweeted an image of the supposed Moto X4 on July 4, however, it now appears that this may be another device entirely. In a tweet from August 4, Blass made reference to “bad information” and reaffirmed the design of the Moto X4, which actually appears to feature the rear camera flash above the camera sensors, not below.
Hardest part of this is admitting you had bad information – or an early render. I’ve seen the Moto X4 final design – it is indeed this one. pic.twitter.com/lHsaLWtckK

As to what the above device leaked on the fourth of July is, that’s still to be speculated upon.

Update #1, July 4: The first image of the Moto X4 has leaked (see above). It was recently posted on Twitter by Evan Blass and shows the front as well as the back of the upcoming smartphone. The device looks a lot like the rest of the Moto lineup with its large circular camera housing on the rear and the fingerprint scanner positioned on the front, below the screen. The image shows the gold version of the Moto X4, although we do expect to see it in a few other color options once it’s officially released.

Do you like the design of the upcoming Moto X4? Let us in know in the comments.

Original post: You would be forgiven if you forgot all about Motorola’s Moto X, the original Moto device that helped the then Google subsidiary become relevant again in the smartphone space. After all, the last iteration was released in 2015, with the now Lenovo-owned Motorola having focused on its Moto Z line of higher-tier devices.

However, it appears as if Lenovo is ready to give some love to the almost-forgotten Moto X line with the Moto X4, whose specifications have reportedly been leaked by famed leaker Evan Blass through VentureBeat.

According to the report, the Moto X4 will feature a 5.2-inch display and no capacitive buttons in sight – similar to previous Moto X iterations, the Moto X4 looks to feature on-screen buttons. Somewhere on the front will reportedly be a fingerprint sensor.

As far as cameras are concerned, a 16-megapixel shooter should take decent selfies, while the 8-megapixel and 12-megapixel rear cameras should give your pictures a bit more oomph. It is unknown how the two cameras will be utilized – they could either go down the HUAWEI P10 route and use one of the sensors for monochrome images, or the iPhone 7 Plus and OnePlus 5 route and use the second sensor to allow for optical zoom and portrait images.

Under the hood, an octa-core 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 and 4 GB of RAM reportedly power the Moto X4, with 64 GB of native storage augmented by the microSD card slot. Android 7.1 Nougat is the star of the show, but making sure it shines through multiple weather conditions are the 3,000 mAh battery and IP68 certification.

Whether all of this is enough to persuade folks to buy the Moto X4 is a different question. The phone will reportedly be the first non-Google phone to work on Project Fi, which has its fair share of customers. However, between the Moto Z2 Play, OnePlus 5, and the HONOR 9, there is much more competition at the mid-tier level than during the days of the Moto X Pure Edition.

As such, it is likely that Motorola will heavily push the phone’s image capabilities and design. No word on pricing yet, but the Moto X4 will reportedly debut in time for the holiday shopping season.
