The future of display technology is foldable and Intel knows it all too well. Showcasing its newest 10nm core-based processor — Tiger Lake — at CES 2020, Intel gave us a glimpse at a massive foldable PC.
Made of OLED, the 17.3-inch foldable device is all display minus any physical keyboard. It’s codenamed Horseshoe Bend and is by far the largest foldable PC ever to exist. Lenovo also launched its foldable PC Thinkpad X1 Fold at CES 2020, but its display tops off at 13.3-inches.
The future of PC form factor
When unfolded, the Horseshoe Bend looks like a 17-inch monitor. Its large size means it more closely resembles a traditional laptop when folded compared to Lenovo’s X1 Fold.
It also has a kickstand at the back so you can pair it with a wireless keyboard and mouse to use the entire screen real estate. There’s an option to use an on-screen keyboard as well.
At CES, Intel showed demos of webpage scrolling and video editing on the foldable PC. You can watch a video on one half of the screen and read an article on the other half. The Verge notes that the device was running Windows 10, but Intel sees Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 10X as a better fit for the form factor.
Intel Tiger Lake
Intel used the Horseshoe Bend as an example of what its Tiger Lake chip can do. The company did not reveal any specifications of Tiger Lake, but the platform is set to ship in laptops later this year.
What we do know about Tiger Lake is that it is set to bring a double-digit performance boost over 10th Gen Intel Core processors. It also comes with Intel Xe graphics architecture, which the company claims can match standalone GPUs.
Tiger Lake will also feature native Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.
As for the Horseshoe Bend, the foldable PC is just a concept for now. However, it is an important indicator of where PC form factors are headed and of large foldable PCs to come.
