TL;DR
  • Instagram has confirmed the app is blocking some users from accessing their accounts.
  • Some users are seeing errors suggesting their account was banned or suspended.
  • Some users are also reporting drastic drops in follower counts.

Some Instagram users are getting quite an unpleasant surprise this morning. The company has confirmed that there’s an issue that’s preventing some users from accessing their accounts.

This morning, a flood of Instagram users made it known on Twitter that they are unable to get into their Instagram accounts. There were also reports that some users were seeing notifications that their accounts have been suspended or even banned from the platform.

The error appears to be affecting a variety of users, including The Verge which states some of its own employees have received the suspended or banned notification.

In response to the panic, Instagram announced (via its Twitter account) that its app is currently experiencing issues and it’s looking into them.

We’re aware that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We’re looking into it and apologize for the inconvenience. #instagramdown

So if you were worried that you’re account got suspended or banned, you can breathe easy. You’re not actually banned or suspended, it’s just an error on Instagram’s part.

However, that’s not the only troubling development that has come from this error. Some users are claiming that they are seeing big drop offs in follower counts. As The Verge points out, its own account reportedly lost about 10,000 followers and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo apparently lost 3 million followers from his previous count of 493 million followers. And even Instagram’s own account was affected, losing over million followers.

Twitter has yet to comment on the follower count issue, but it’s likely that it’s connected with the suspended or banned error. If you’re having trouble accessing Instagram, here are a few things you can do.
