TL;DR
  • HUAWEI has released a video teaser for the upcoming Mate 20 series, suggesting it will include a square shaped rear camera shell.
  • This design had been seen in previous leaks and suggests the phone will have a triple-lens rear camera setup.

Huawei is teasing its upcoming Mate 20 flagship phone series and it looks like it will include the rounded square camera housing seen in previously leaked images. HUAWEI released the short promo video on its official Weibo channel (via GSMArena), and it included an outline of the unique camera compartment.

The video is set in a desert landscape, featuring a pumping soundtrack and some quad bike action with the quote “This is the time to explore something new. This is Mate.”

The use of the square camera shell is significant as it implies the use of a triple-lens rear camera (a lens in each corner of the square, and a flash in the fourth). The HUAWEI P20 Pro, the company’s earlier 2018 flagship, also had a triple rear camera, albeit in a different formation.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are both expected to launch next month, but we don’t know which will come with the square camera housing (it could be both). We do already know, however, that the Mate 20 Lite does not include such a setup (find out more about that phone in the hands-on video at the previous link).

The new Mate 20s are set to hit the scene October 16. Learn more about them in our dedicated Mate 20 rumors article at the link.
