TL;DR
  • The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro has a textured glass back that seems to be highly resistant to scratches.
  • That’s one of the things JerryRigEverything discovered in its new durability text video.
  • However, the front display on the Mate 20 Pro may have some issues.

The HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro is one of the most impressive smartphones ever released, with its triple camera, Kirin 980 processor, its nano-SIM card, as well as the in-screen fingerprint scanner. As it turns out, the back of the phone is also highly scratch resistant, according to the latest phone durability test from the folks at JerryRigEverything.

The video starts with a scratch test. The tempered glass on top leaves scratches at the test’s level six, with deeper cuts at level seven, which is normal for this kind of glass. The phone’s notch has a speaker grill, along with a 24MP camera and a Face ID sensor, all protected by the same glass. The sides and buttons are all made of anodized metal.

Moving around to the Mate 20 Pro’s textured back, the scratch test shows no grooves at all, which is very impressive. The back is also very resistant to fingerprints.

All is not well with this phone when it went up against the channel’s other two tests. The burn test on the Mate 20 Pro’s 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display showed that if you put a lighter against it for 25 seconds, it will begin burning, and those pixels will remain burned into the screen after the lighter is removed. As for the infamous bend test, the video showed the glass shattering in the front. It’s possible this was due in part to the level seven scratches placed on the display at first, but other phones have had similar tests and their glass fronts did not shatter when bent.

The Mate 20 Pro appears to be a mixed bag on its durability tests, but there’s no doubt that the textured glass made the back very tough indeed.
