A leaked render of the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro wirelessly charging on the back of a HUAWEI Mate 20 smartphone.
TL;DR
  • It looks like HUAWEI will release a new Apple AirPods ripoff, the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro.
  • Notably, it appears that you will be able to wirelessly charge the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro on the back of your HUAWEI Mate 20.
  • While poaching power from your smartphone may seem like something most people wouldn’t do, it certainly is a novel idea.

According to WinFuture, we can expect a new set of Apple AirPods ripoffs from Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei. The leaked images (reposted below) show that the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro are undeniably clones of Apple’s famous truly wireless headphones.

While yet another set of AirPods clones is hardly exciting, there is a notable potential feature that makes the headphones stand out from the pack. According to WinFuture, the wireless charging case that holds the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro will not only charge via a wireless charging pad but also via the back of the upcoming HUAWEI Mate 20 and HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro.

That means that if you find yourself low on juice when it comes to your Freebuds, you can give them a boost from your smartphone — no cable or wall outlet needed.

While many power users might balk at handing battery power over from their smartphone (which probably barely makes it through a day already on its own), you’ve gotta admit that the notion of using your smartphone to charge something else is pretty cool.

As for the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro themselves, check out the images below:

As we said: blatant Apple AirPods ripoff.

According to WinFuture, the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro will connect to smartphones via Bluetooth 5.0 and will allow bitrates of up to 560kbps, making for high-quality audio listening. The headphones will also allow for hands-free phone calls via AI-assisted voice recognition, and quick access to Google Assistant.

Each earbud allegedly weighs 4.1g and is 43 x 18.6mm. It is estimated that the earbuds will last 15 hours on one charge and will cost somewhere in the range of 150 euros (~$175). We’ll know more about the HUAWEI Freebuds 2 Pro soon, as they are likely to launch with the HUAWEI Mate 20 on October 16.
