You can now root your Google Wifi thanks to independent developers over at project GaleForce. The open source initiative is seeking to help users access a deeper level of customization on their Google router via its dedicated GitHub page.

There, you can find the steps you need to compile a recovery image and flash it onto your Google Wifi, though doing so requires that you physically open up the router to gain access to its innards. Indeed, rooting the device is a relatively complex, multi-step process, and the rewards are only there for those who have specific requirements.

The team notes that you could use Google Wifi to setup a VPN or dynamic DNS client, as well as adjust the gateway IP address settings, but I suspect that the kind of people who want these customization options made sure they bought a router that already allowed for this.

Still, if you’re interested, you don’t have to worry about future updates: according to the GitHub, any Google updates will be automatically applied to the router — you don’t need to repeat this process with new images for each new build.
