New Google TV update improves speed and storage
- Google TV has received a new update.
- The update includes long-awaited speed and performance improvements.
- The update also allows users to maximize their storage space.
Google TV was created as a way to make watching content across all of your favorite streaming apps a seamless experience by bringing it all together in one place. While being able to watch your preferred content without having to switch between apps is nice, it’s not perfect — with speed and storage being common issues. In its latest update, Google TV looks to address those problems head-on.
According to Google, its new update will include CPU optimization and improvements to cache management that it says will reduce the time it takes to for the Google TV home screen to load at startup. It will also improve navigation to make scrolling in a tab and switching between tabs faster so you’re not always sitting there staring at a loading animation.
Other performance enhancements include reducing the amount of RAM used to provide a faster and more stable viewing experience, as well as image caching optimization that should speed up the time it takes to switch to kids’ profiles.
As for storage, the update will bring a new menu item called “Free up storage.” Found in the settings, “Free up storage” allows you to easily clear your cache and uninstall apps you don’t plan on using anymore. So when you’re close to hitting your storage limit, all you have to do is go to Settings > System > Storage > Free up storage.
Finally, the update makes some changes to the way Google TV handles app installations. Google states these changes will result in users seeing fewer storage-related errors when trying to install a new app. Additionally, a new background-run automated process has been implemented to free up more space.
Not that long ago, a leak suggested that Google TV could be getting ready to add some new capabilities like integrating Google TV with Wear OS.
