TL;DR
  • Google TV’s individual user profiles have been delayed for the next few months.
  • The much-requested feature was first announced in early October.
  • The platform’s new Ambient Mode cards, however, will roll out on time.

Since Google TV’s launch in 2020, it’s been missing one seemingly obvious feature: support for multiple user profiles. Google announced in October 2021 that it would add user profiles to Google TV “in the coming weeks,” but that update never arrived. Now, Google (via 9to5Google) has confirmed that user profiles will be delayed even further.

The company says support for individual user profiles will roll out to Google TV “in the coming months.” Whether that means a January-February release or later, we don’t know.

When they do roll out, personal profiles will let each member of your household set up their own unique profile within the Google TV interface. They’ll receive their own recommendations and add media to their own watchlists. Google Assistant support will also be available for all user profiles and tied to each user’s personal Google account.

Back in October, Google also announced new ambient mode cards, which would display sports scores, weather, news, and more relevant information on Google TV when it’s not being actively used. These cards are apparently not delayed. In fact, according to Google, they’re rolling out now to select users in the United States.
