If you're lucky, Google might pay you to monitor your TV habits

Today on Reddit, a user posted a photograph of a letter they received. The letter looks to be from Google and it describes a Google TV monitoring program akin to Nielsen ratings.
The letter says that by signing up to this new, yet-to-be-confirmed program, a user can make up to $479 per year simply by letting Google monitor their television-watching habits. The letter also suggests that the program is associated with Google Opinion Rewards.

If we assume the letter is legitimate, it suggests that Google is looking to expand its efforts into in-home entertainment services. This could mean that it’s looking to expand its YouTube TV service, or it could mean it’s developing a new in-home streaming device running something like Android TV. Or, it could just be that Google is looking to get more data on its users for advertising purposes and nothing more.
There are about 126 million households in America, which means only about 4,200 households will get this letter. However, that number of households would give Google a good representation of the country’s television habits and it would only cost the company about $2 million a year, which to Google is chump change.
