Google Stadia controller on table

Google surprised almost no-one yesterday when it announced that it was discontinuing its Stadia game streaming service. The platform had only been around for just under three years but achieved little in the way of wide adoption.

So with this latest news in mind, we wanted to ask you whether you think shutting Stadia down is the correct move for Google. You can answer this question via the poll below and leave a comment if you have more on your mind.

Is shutting Stadia down the right move for Google?

2134 votes

We can understand why people would vote “yes,” as the platform didn’t enjoy widespread adoption and Google also took its time to bring the service to more markets. It’s also worth noting that Stadia required users to buy individual games for the most part, which went against the growing trend of all-you-can-eat services like Xbox Game Pass.

On the other hand, we wouldn’t be surprised if people voted “no.” Stadia is a rather radical technology, and the idea of playing games without splashing out on an expensive console or PC is really cutting-edge. Best of all, those with ideal conditions could enjoy top-notch visuals that normally required more expensive hardware. So we can understand why some people feel there was still scope to make business/strategy changes instead of pulling the plug outright.
