Google+ Android app getting "brand new version" in coming days

Google+ engineering manager Leo Deegan says the new version will be here soon, but the noted improvements aren't game-changers.

A “brand new version” of the Google+ Android app will be here in the next few days, according to Google+ engineering manager Leo Deegan. Deegan discussed the new version in a post yesterday (via Android Police), stating that the update was a “culmination of a complete rewrite of many core features” of Google+.

Deegan said that, through this rewriting process, the team had improved “stream rendering and scrolling,” the “photo lightbox,” the way spammed comments are viewed, and more. However, Deegan also mentioned that people may encounter “known issues,” such as the full post refreshing when you leave a comment, during the initial rollout of the overhaul. Take a look at the image Deegan attached alongside his post below.

These improvements don’t sound like they will change up the Google+ formula in any major way, which may come as good news for fans. For those who fell out of love with the platform years ago, however, this “brand new version” might not include anything to bring them back.

It’s still early days, though, and the rewrite process may lead to bigger and better features to come. Deegan said the team would be “enabling” the new version over the next several days, so this could mean some back-end changes rather than the rollout of a new app update in Google Play. Keep your eyes peeled for the optimizations from today.
