Today, Google announced on its India blog the Play Store will support payments through Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

According to Google, UPI will show up as a payment option in the Play Store over the next few weeks. Once you see UPI as an option, you can link your UPI ID in the Play Store’s billing section and pay for apps, games, music, books, and more with your favorite UPI apps. Options include BHIM, Google Pay, Paytm, and PhonePe.

If you live in India and don’t use UPI, don’t fret — the Play Store still supports other payment options, such as credit cards, carrier billing, net banking, and more.

The addition of UPI as a payment option in the Play Store was only a matter of time. UPI enables real-time, instant payments from one bank account to another. Because of the flexibility in how to use UPI, India residents use the payment system for everything from utility bill payments and mobile recharges to in-store transactions and more.

141 banks currently support UPI, with the number of transactions jumping from 672.75 million in January to 918.35 million in August. That’s an increase of over 200 million transactions in just eight months. According to Google, UPI has outpaced all other digital payment services in India and is the most popular digital payment service in the country.
