Google's Motion Stills app gets a fresh coat of paint and AR stickers

Google's latest update to Motion Stills introduces an overhauled interface, a new AR mode, and possible Facebook integration.

TL;DR
  • Google launched version 2.0 of Motion Stills, its GIF creator app.
  • The update includes a new interface that moves some things around, a new AR mode, and hints at Facebook integration.
  • Motion Stills is available for free from the Play Store.

Google‘s GIF creator app Motion Stills received its 2.0 update today, and with an overhauled interface and new AR stickers, this is not a small update.

Motion Stills now features a cleaner camera viewfinder that moves the shutter button and mode switcher to the frosted area at the bottom. Previously, that area worked as a gallery that showed your recent captures.

That gallery now sits as a thumbnail on the bottom left, while the camera switcher is on the bottom right.

Even though the Settings icon remains on the top right, the Settings screen shows a bit more information compared to before. For example, your GIF resolution and repeat shared clips information are now displayed in-line.

There is also a new AR Mode that lets you overlay your creations with one of six figures: an alien, dinosaur, planet, gingerbread man, chicken, and robot. Icons for basketball, bat, parrot, and UFO are displayed, but not yet live.

Unfortunately, you can only use one figure at a time. If you decide that a dinosaur fits better with your GIF, you cannot have it sit alongside a chicken, for example.

Finally, Android Police‘s APK teardown revealed Facebook integration could be an update away. This would allow you to more easily launch and use Motion Stills from Facebook Messenger, though the feature is not yet live.
