TL;DR
  • Some Google Home users say the app repeatedly asks them to sign in or complete setup whenever they open it.
  • Reports dating back to mid-October mention versions 4.34.22 and 4.35.25.1, although the issue doesn’t appear widespread.
  • No confirmed fix exists, but affected users can try updating to version 4.36.24 or newer.

The Google Home app is supposed to remember your smart home devices, but some users say it’s having trouble remembering them. For at least two weeks, the app has been repeatedly welcoming existing users as though they’ve never opened it before, turning a routine trip to their smart home controls into an unexpected account setup exercise.

The complaints have been trickling into Reddit discussions and Google’s support forums since mid-October. Instead of landing on their familiar dashboard, affected users say they see a welcome screen whenever they launch Google Home, forcing them to select or set up their Google account before accessing connected devices.

The app isn’t always in a hurry to cooperate, with some users reporting waiting up to 10 minutes for their devices to appear when they skip setup. It’s one of those bugs that easily disrupt your usual habit of controlling smart home devices directly from the lock screen, so we understand the frustration among those affected.

The fact that the complaints span multiple Google Home app versions, including v4.34.22 and the newer v4.35.25.1, is even more frustrating. However, the issue doesn’t appear widespread. We’ve used the Google Home app regularly on the affected v4.34.22 and even the latest v4.36.24 without encountering the issue. So if you’re affected, it’s worth checking the Play Store for the latest version. It hasn’t been confirmed as a fix, but it’s a reasonable first step while the cause remains unclear.

One user claims Google support acknowledged a known issue following an app update. However, Google has not publicly confirmed this, and community representatives continue directing complaints to support.

We’ve reached out to Google for clarification on what’s causing the repeated sign-in prompts, whether the latest app update addresses the problem, and if a broader fix is underway. We’ll update this article if we hear back.
