Gionee unveils M6 and M6 Plus, launching in India soon
Privacy-focused smartphones, like the Blackphone, the Turing Phone, and the BlackBerry Priv may not have taken off the way many expected them to, but for those who do want some form of privacy and security with their smartphones, there is now a new option on the block. Chinese OEM Gionee has unveiled the M6 and M6 Plus at a launch yesterday, which the company claims are the world’s first fully-secure smartphones.
Both phones come with a MediaTek Helio P10 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 13 MP and 8 MP rear and front cameras respectively. The difference between the two comes in the form of display sizes and battery capacities. While the M6 features a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display, Gionee bumps the screen size up to 6-inches with the M6 Plus. On the battery front, the former comes with a large 5,000 mAh, while the latter packs a massive 6,020 mAh unit.
What makes Gionee’s new smartphones particularly intriguing is an in-built data encryption chip that has been added to keep user communication and content safe. According to the company, the dedicated security chip offers 10 layers of protection for the user’s personal data, such as call records, images, documents, and other sensitive information. While all this does sound impressive, the consumer demand for privacy-focused smartphones isn’t exactly that huge as it was earlier believed to be. Of course, even if this isn’t important to you, the huge batteries are what are the biggest selling point of these smrtphones.
The 64 GB and 128 GB variants of the M6 are priced at CNY 2,699 (~$405, Rs 27,200) and CNY 2,899 (~$435, Rs 29,200) respectively, while the same storage variants of the M6 Plus will set you back CNY 2,999 (~$450, Rs 30,200) and CNY 3,199 (~$480, Rs 32,200). Gionee is offering both the smartphones in Champagne Gold and Mocha Gold color options. The Gionee M6 and M6 Plus will arrive in the Chinese market on August 6 and August 13, and are expected to hit the Indian market later that month.
