For example, it now has nearly all of the X-Men movies, and all of the Ice Age films, which were only available in Canada.

Why the differences in content?

So why is the Disney Plus Canada content different than what you get in the US? The major reason is licensing. Many television and streaming services made deals with Disney (and 20th Century Fox, which Disney bought in 2019). Those deals allow them to show certain series and films to be shown on their networks and streaming services before Disney Plus launched. As a result, some movies, like the Marvel X-Men and Fantastic Four films, were able to be streamed first on Disney Plus in Canada.

In 2021, Disney Plus got a big price hike in Canada. The main reason for that increase is that the service added the Star brand. That means customers can watch a ton of content from Disney’s and Twentieth Century Fox’s library that are considered more mature than the normal content on the service.

Movies like the Alien, Die Hard, Predator, and Maze Runner series, and many more films that are R-rated in the US are now available on Disney Plus Canada. The Star brand also includes TV shows like The X-Files, Alias, Firefly, and many more. There will also be original programming exclusive to Canadian streaming audiences via the Star brand as well. Because of this, the service will also have new parental controls.

So why isn’t the Star brand coming to the US? Because much of the content is either already available or will be coming soon, to Disney’s Hulu streaming service, which is only available in the US.
