Comments of the Week: Plastic smartphones, OPPO, and Pixel prototypes
Hey everyone! Welcome back to another installment of Comment Authority, our weekly roundup of the best comments on Android Authority from you, our readers. This past week we saw passionate conversations about smartphone materials (plastic good!) and smartphone designs (notch bad!). We also saw a great conversation happen surrounding the OPPO Find X, the next exciting flagship from the Chinese manufacturer.
Without any further ado, let’s read some of the best comments of the week!
Missing the bygone days of plastic
In a recent poll run here at Android Authority, we asked a simple question: do you prefer smartphones primarily made of metal or those made primarily of glass? While the poll netted some interesting results (metal was the clear winner), we were surprised to see how many of you out there miss the days of plastic smartphones.
I could explain to you why everyone seems to think that, but I don’t need to, because commenter
sums it up perfectly in this comment:The OPPO Find X has got us excited
Our own Hadlee Simons wrote a very interesting article about how the upcoming OPPO Find X could make smartphones exciting again. It’s no secret that smartphone design has gotten pretty stagnant, and maybe OPPO is in the right place at the right time to upend the industry.
The comments on that article are filled with people equally as excited for the new device (and, as usual, some that are very much NOT looking forward to it). But one comment rose above the rest from frequent visitor balcobomber25. Check what they had to say:
This might be the worst notch yet
We post a lot of leaks here at Android Authority, and last week we saw one for the allegedly upcoming Motorola Power One. Although the device has stock Android (yes!) it also features a very prominent notch (no!). How prominent? It is probably the widest notch we’ve yet seen, wide enough that there’s barely any room for notification icons.
Why even bother having a notch if it isn’t kept as small as possible? That’s a good question, and one that commenter adsubzero couldn’t help but ask:
Don’t forget about the chin
Speaking of notches, the other much-maligned design aspect of smartphones nowadays is the chin, otherwise known as the bottom bezel. Aside from the iPhone X, no smartphone has been able to completely eliminate the chin, although plenty of companies have got chins down to a very small width.
But the recently leaked prototype for the upcoming Google Pixel 3 features both a notch and a wide chin. It reminded commenter AngryGoomba of a fictional character hellbent on dominating the universe:
Have a great weekend everyone! I’m leaving today on a European vacation, but I’ll still be writing next week’s Comment Authority from a cafe in Spain somewhere.
