TL;DR
  • Nothing CEO Carl Pei is denying theories that the Phone 4b was a repurposed CMF Phone 3 Pro, instead confirming it is the direct successor to the Phone 3a Lite.
  • Nothing dropped the “a Lite” moniker in favor of the simpler “b” tag to keep product tiers easy to digest amid rising memory costs.
  • Despite community controversy over its placement and design, early Phone 4b sales are tracking at roughly double the company’s internal targets.

The launch of the Nothing Phone 4b raised plenty of eyebrows across the tech community, with many questioning where the new budget device actually fits in the company’s portfolio. While Nothing’s leadership previously stepped in to clarify the Phone 4b’s branding and identity, Nothing CEO Carl Pei has now directly responded to community theories claiming the Phone 4b was originally conceived as a rebranded CMF phone.

In a reaction video on the company’s official YouTube channel (also highlighted more recently in a YouTube Short), Pei flatly dismissed the idea that the Phone 4b was a repurposed product from Nothing’s budget-centric CMF sub-brand.

“It’s not like a CMF product redirected,” Pei clarified in response to the claim (at the 6:02 mark). According to Pei, the Phone 4b is actually the successor to the previous generation’s Phone 3a Lite, with the company opting to streamline its confusing naming conventions rather than launching a “Phone 4a Lite.” Pei noted (around the 3:53 mark) that the “b” doesn’t strictly stand for “budget,” but was chosen simply because it was cleaner and easier for consumers to digest as product tiers expand.

Previously, Nothing co-founder and head of marketing, Akis Evangelidis, tried to address the Phone 4b branding by explaining that the new moniker represented an entry point beneath the standard number and “a” series. However, Evangelidis stopped short of explicitly confirming that the 4b was designed from day one to replace the 3a Lite line.

The speculation stemmed from pre-release leaks suggesting the Phone 4b was intended to be the CMF Phone 3 Pro but was repositioned under the primary Nothing brand to justify a higher price tag.

Pei explained that escalating industry costs (specifically rising memory prices) and an upward shift across the smartphone market forced Nothing to ensure it retained an accessible price tier. Despite the polarizing design choices and the chatter surrounding its origins, Pei revealed that the Phone 4b is performing exceptionally well commercially, noting that early sales are tracking at roughly double the company’s internal targets.
