It’s smart to keep your phone handy while driving for GPS navigation, emergency calls, and more. However, it’s not a good idea (and not usually legal) to have your phone in your hand while driving. Thankfully, there’s a solution to increase your safety on the road while still being able to use your phone — a car phone holder.

The best car phone holders and mounts

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of the best car phone holders regularly as new devices launch.

1. Aukey Magnetic Car Phone Holder

If you want a phone car holder that’s simple to install, this small magnetic car holder from Aukey is for you.

First, attach the suction cup base to the dashboard of your car. You can then place the included magnetic metal plate in your phone’s case between the cover and the phone, or you can stick it directly on your phone. Finally, place your phone on the Aukey phone car mount, and you’re all set.

The Aukey holder stays in place even if you encounter bumps or other vibrations while driving. It’s also angled to stay below your line of sight while you drive.

2. iOttie One Touch 4 Dash and Windshield Car Phone Mount

iOttie is one of the best car phone holder makers, and its One Touch 4 Dashboard and Windshield Phone Mount is its most popular product. It’s easy to see why: the design allows for one-handed mounting in the secure holder and a full range of movement.

It has a sturdy suction cup that can be placed on the car’s inside windshield, or you can use the included sticky pad to place the mount on the dashboard. Further, the mount’s telescopic arm lets you find the perfect position for your phone while driving.

3. Belkin Universal Vent Mount

The Belkin Universal Mount is a simple option that attaches to your air conditioning vent. The side arms squeeze tightly to lock your phone in place, and a cable clip allows you to charge your phone and lock the cable in place. With aluminum arms and a carefully engineered pinion spring, you shouldn’t have to worry about your phone slipping or falling.

Belkin boasts a universal design, and the mount can expand to accommodate devices up to 3.66-inches wide. It should be plenty wide enough for most phones on the market, though don’t try to wedge an iPad in there. Soft pads on the back and sides of the mount should keep your phone free from scratches.

4. Logitech Plus Trip Vent Mount

Logitech’s Plus Trip mount is another option that attaches to your vents in seconds. However, it’s much simpler than the Belkin Universal Mount and attaches using magnets. Don’t worry; you won’t need a magnetic device. Just attach the included metal pad to your phone, and you’re good to go.

The small design of the Plus Trip is one of its best selling points. It’s tiny enough that your phone looks like it’s floating in midair. That means no cables or wires and no bulky mount that blocks part of your view of the road. However, it’s tough to say how strong the magnets are if you try to drive offroad.

5. Loncaster dashboard mount

Loncaster’s mount is a bit different than most on the list, as it’s a silicone pad that mounts to your dashboard. It features a slot for your phone and one for a charging cable, plus a small tray area that can hold objects like hand sanitizer or change.

The silicone design helps to hold your phone in place, and the dashboard attachment prevents your phone from hanging directly in your face. You can grab the Loncaster mount in either red or black. If you manage to get the mount dirty, the mount is washable for easy reuse.

6. Scosche MagicMount

This inexpensive car phone holder offers a quick, easy, and cheap. Like the Aukey holder at the top of our list, the Scosche MagicMount also works via magnets.

A magnetic pad attaches to the inside of your phone case, allowing your phone to stick to the mount when pressed against it. It’s a neat solution, but the trade-off here is that you’ll have to use a smartphone case if you want to use this product.

Once you’ve placed your phone on the magnetized pad, you’re free to move it with 4-axis, 360-degree motion thanks to its dash-mounted stand. It’s slightly pricier than the WizGear, but if you want the flexibility of dash mounting rather than vent mounting, this is a great option.

7. XDesign air vent mount

Here’s another car phone holder that’s made to attach to the vehicle’s air vent. However, the XDesign Phone Car Mount keeps the phone in place with physical plastic arms. Once you assemble the mount and place it on the air vent, press a button on the back to expand the mount’s sides.

It supports phones from 1.97 inches wide to 3.62 inches wide. Close the mount after you place your smartphone inside the frame, and it should work even with a lot of bumps and impacts on the road. It can also rotate 360 degrees thanks to its pivot design.

8. Topgo Cup Holder Phone Mount

Do you have an extra cup holder to spare? It might be the perfect place to keep a car phone holder, and the Topgo Cup Holder Phone Mount is one of the best of its kind. We would prefer a better build, but the unit works very well, doesn’t block windshield visibility, and has a flexible arm, so you can accommodate its orientation to your needs. It’s a great buy if you have a cup holder to spare.
