There’s also a special cooling system to keep the heat out of the case when overclocking for higher framerates.
The battery is huge. This is a big phone and it has to be to contain the massive 6,000mAh battery. There’s a charger bundled with support for 30W wired fast charging.
It has a low-latency 144Hz refresh rate display. The ROG Phone 3 sports a 6.59-inch AMOLED panel with HDR 10+ support. Combine that with the industry-leading 144Hz refresh rate and 25ms touch latency and you’ve got a panel tailor-made for gaming on the go.
There are four cameras in total. The back camera has a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, along with a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP macro camera. The selfie shooter is a 24MP camera.
Air Triggers are back. Asus’ ultrasonic bumpers make a return on the Asus ROG Phone 3. The haptic shoulder buttons now support swiping and sliding gestures and can even be split to act as four bumpers instead of two.
The software is feature-packed. X-Mode gives you complete control over performance and even change the color of the ROG logo on the rear of the phone. Meanwhile, Armory Crate lets users tweak inputs and settings to optimize each individual game.
There are a ton of accessories for this thing. The ROG Kunai 3 Gamepad, TwinView Dock 3, Mobile Desktop Dock 2, Professional Dock, ROG Clip, and more. There are no shortage of extras for the ROG Phone 3.

Asus ROG 3 vs ROG 2: What’s the difference?
The biggest upgrades over the already great Asus ROG Phone 2 come in the raw specs department. The Snapdragon 865 Plus improves on the ROG Phone 2’s Snapdragon 855 Plus by pushing gaming performance to the max. Likewise, the 120Hz display found on the 2019 model has now been pushed to a 144Hz refresh rate.
The additional macro camera is also a plus, though it’s the main sensor that has received the biggest upgrades. There are also the tweaks to the Air Triggers that may entice some dedicated gamers that want up to four additional input keys.
Otherwise, the two phones share a lot of the same DNA. The new ROG phone looks very similar to its predecessor and the overall display and battery specs are near identical. The same side-mounted USB-C port can also be found on both the second- and third-gen phones.
Unlike the ROG Phone 2, the Asus ROG Phone 3 doesn’t have a headphone jack. The Active Cooler accessory does have one, though.
Should you buy the ROG Phone 3?
If you want the very best gaming phone money can buy, then the answer appears to be a resounding yes.
Unlike previous Asus gaming phones which have remained affordable despite the ludicrous specs, the ROG Phone 3 is pushing beyond the €999 mark if you want the model that guarantees peak performance.
The ROG Phone 3 isn't cheap, but if you want the best gaming phone money can buy, this is it.
Is that price increase justified when you’re getting the Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, a 144Hz display, up to 16GB RAM, and a monster battery? According to our reviewer David Imel, it absolutely is. David says that the ROG Phone 3 “has a huge amount of features gamers and non-gamers alike would enjoy.”
However, for those that want a more rounded experience with less of a focus on gaming, there are clear alternatives out there like the OnePlus 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, Sony Xperia 1 II, and LG V60.
