We have seen mash-up games released for phones before, but the latest such combo from Square Enix actually feels more organic than many of them that have launched in the past. Arkanoid vs Space Invaders brings together two classic arcade games; the brick-breaking Arkanoid with the sci-fi shooter Space Invaders.

Both games involve the player moving a platform on the bottom of the screen, so it seems like a natural fit to combine these two gameplay styles into one. The game has 150 levels, and not only do you have to break the floating bricks in each level, but you also have to deal with the slowly moving aliens who are shooting at you from above.

Players will be able to access special abilities that will allow them to reflect the invaders’ energy blasts back at them, among other things. The bricks can serve to block your attacks, or to offer power-ups to add more ways to kill aliens. In fact, the game brings in even more classic game characters to add to the mash-up. You can unlock 40 characters that will offer you some additional abilities.

Arkanoid vs Space Invaders throws in a Hard mode for players who want more of a challenge, and there are special boss levels where you have to deal with even tougher enemies. You can compare your scores with others via online leaderboards. The best part of the game is that there’s just a one-time cost of $3.99 to snag it, with no in-app purchases or ads.
