Add Android Authority on Google:
TL;DR
  • Google is developing a hands-free Emergency SOS trigger for Android devices.
  • References to the feature appear in the code of Google’s Personal Safety app.
  • Based on an animation, we say the feature could be activated when a user says “Help” three times.

Google’s Personal Safety is an extremely useful app that lets users share their whereabouts with loved ones, get alerts about extreme weather, or raise an alarm using the Emergency SOS feature. On Pixel phones and watches, this app also handles features such as Fall Detection and Crash Detection.

Currently, triggering an Emergency SOS, especially on non-Pixel devices, requires users to physically press the power button five times. But now it seems like Google may be adding another way to trigger it even without touching the phone.

Google may be preparing to add a voice-activated safety feature that sends an SOS and calls first responders in an emergency without pressing any button. We’ve spotted new references for the features in the code for Google’s Personal Safety app in build version 2026.09.16.982745548. Needless to say, it isn’t available to users just yet.

Code
<string name="add_hh_way_to_start">Add hands-free way to start</string>
<string name="demo_voice_cancel_desc_text">Say “cancel” to dismiss Emergency SOS</string>
<string name="demo_voice_touch_and_hold_title_text">Say “yes” to continue</string>

The strings also point to the likelihood of the feature requiring auditory confirmation, such as Yes to continue or Cancel to dismiss the SOS.

Since the Personal Safety app isn’t limited to Pixels, we can expect the feature to be available on a host of supported Android devices from other manufacturers as well (Samsung is not included since it offers its own SOS features). Beyond the strings above, we’ve also seen an animation that likely hints at voice SOS functionality. It shows SOS features, including a location check, emergency video recording, and emergency calling, getting activated when someone says “Help” thrice. This animation is likely to be shown on the screen while setting up the feature.

While this definitely feels like a useful feature, Google should have added a way to call emergency services even without confirmation. Yes, it could have misfired, but imagine the number of times users may not be able to use this feature in unfortunate scenarios because it won’t fire without confirmation.

Since the feature is far from final, there’s some hope Google considers this possibility and adds an option to bypass the validation. We’ll ensure letting you know when Google makes any new changes or rolls the feature out more broadly.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
