Android could soon turn your gamepad into a mouse
Oct 8, 2026 — 10:10 AM ET

- Strings in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 reference unreleased gamepad mouse functionality.
- It looks like a future update will allow free mouse-style cursor control using game controllers.
- It’s unclear when this functionality will be enabled.
Android is working to make game controllers more useful outside of games. Strings in the recent Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 suggest that soon, you’ll be able to use video game controllers for mouse control throughout the Android UI.
You can already control Android using a gamepad, but as it stands today, that control is limited, with controllers manipulating a cursor that snaps between clickable elements on screen. When the new gamepad mouse feature we’ve spotted evidence for rolls out, though, you’ll be able to use your gamepad to freely control a mouse-style cursor.

While the existing mode of gamepad control that highlights individual UI elements works well for certain interfaces, elements like floating menus or scrolling feeds can be difficult or impossible to manipulate this way. A free mouse-style cursor solves this issue by fully mimicking touch input: you’ll be able to use your controller’s joystick to put the cursor anywhere on screen, and the controller’s default action button to simulate taps in any location.
Several strings found in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 reference a new gamepad mouse feature, and even describe its functionality:
<string name="gamepad_mouse_title">Gamepad mouse</string>
<string name="gamepad_mouse_summary">Use a connected gamepad to control the cursor</string>
<string name="gamepad_mouse_main_title">Use Gamepad mouse</string>
<string name="gamepad_mouse_footer_description">Gamepad mouse lets you control the cursor and perform actions using a connected gamepad or joystick.</string>Mouse-style control is currently possible using controllers with built-in touchpads or through the use of third-party keymapping apps. But building the functionality directly into Android will make it a lot simpler to use a gamepad in place of a mouse. This could potentially have big usability implications for users who have difficulty manipulating touchscreens.
We can’t tell from the strings we’ve reviewed when this feature will actually be available, but given pieces of it are present in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1, it could be that the feature is meant to debut in stable QPR3, which we’re expecting next spring.
