Android Auto's upcoming Quick Settings UI could get these new tiles too

Google has been working on several new tweaks and features in Android Auto. We recently spotted the company testing new map interface colors and a new weather animation. Now, we’re seeing more evidence that the company is working hard to bring Android-style Quick Settings to Android Auto.

We originally spotted Quick Settings in Android Auto last week. However, at the time, it showed only a single “Do Not Disturb” tile. Now, while digging through the latest version of the Android Auto app (v17.7.663624), we discovered a couple of new tiles that the company is working on: “Battery Saver” and “Theme.”

The Battery Saver tile will let you quickly enable or disable Battery Saver mode on your phone. This could help if your connected Android phone is running low on charge and you can’t plug it in. However, tapping the tile won’t enable Battery Saver mode if your phone is already charging.

The Theme tile will let you switch between “Auto,” “Light,” and “Dark” modes in Android Auto. However, Google has some work to do on this feature. While the dark mode works properly, switching to light mode only changes the colors in Google Maps. This isn’t expected behavior. We tinkered a bit with the app and managed to get the light theme to show up correctly.

Google is also working on two UI styles for the Quick Settings tiles, which will appear depending on the size of your car’s display. For vehicles with larger screens, the Quick Settings UI will have labeled tiles, while smaller displays will show only icons.

Another change we noticed while looking into the app’s code is a new Gemini setting. Google could soon add a “Personalization” toggle to the Gemini settings in Android Auto. It’s unclear what effect this will have while using Gemini in the car. Turning off Gemini personalization on a smartphone usually disables connected Google apps, memory, and saved information. It’s possible that Google is looking to extend that same functionality to cars to improve privacy.

Quick Settings tiles in Android Auto are clearly a work in progress right now, so we’re not expecting them to roll out anytime soon. However, we will keep an eye out for further developments and changes and will update you with any new information as we find it.
