TL;DR
  • Amazon has confirmed that system-wide Dark Mode is coming to the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft.
  • The feature will arrive via a future software update sometime in 2026
  • For now, the device supports Page Color inversion within supported ebooks.

Amazon has confirmed that system-wide Dark Mode is coming to the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in a future software update, addressing one of the device’s more noticeable omissions at launch.

Despite being Amazon’s most advanced Kindle and first large-screen color E-Ink model, the device currently lacks a true Dark Mode across the interface. There is an option to darken book pages using the Page Color setting, but that only applies within supported ebooks. The rest of the experience, including the home screen, library, and workspace, is not supported.

The limitation might be easier to shrug off on a cheaper Kindle, but the Scribe Colorsoft sits firmly in premium territory. At this price, quality-of-life features like system-wide Dark Mode feel more expected (especially when less expensive Kindles, such as the Paperwhite, already support it).

Fortunately, Amazon has confirmed that full Dark Mode is on the way, noting the upcoming feature on its official product listings and support materials. We do not yet have a specific release date, but we can expect to see Dark Mode, along with a few other AI features, via a software update sometime in 2026. The company’s “We want you to know” statement below can be found on the Amazon landing page.

We want you to know
This device doesn’t have a system-wide Dark Mode like other black-and-white Kindle devices. This feature, along with AI reading features Story So Far and Ask This Book, will roll out in 2026 via software updates.

When the update arrives, it should bring the Scribe Colorsoft more in line with the rest of Amazon’s Kindle lineup and make a meaningful difference for readers who prefer a darker, more eye-friendly interface.
