TL;DR
  • Amazon has reportedly fixed a major Appstore issue on Android 12 devices.
  • Android 12 users were unable to launch free and paid apps downloaded via the store.

Some Android 12 users were surprised to discover that the Amazon Appstore wasn’t working properly on their devices. Amazon’s failure to properly test the storefront on Android 12 meant that users couldn’t launch their apps downloaded via the store.

Thankfully, a company spokesperson has now confirmed to Engadget that the problem has been fixed via an Amazon Appstore update:

We have released a fix for an issue impacting app launches for Amazon Appstore customers that have upgraded to Android 12 on their mobile devices.

The spokesperson added that Amazon was contacting affected users with instructions on how to update the Appstore app on their devices. We’re guessing it’s just a case of downloading the latest version of the app via Amazon’s own page.

This hopefully marks the end of a long-running issue Android 12 users have been dealing with. Threads dating back to October showed that Android 12 users were unable to launch apps downloaded via the Appstore. The issue seemed to be related to the storefront’s DRM, affecting both paid and free apps. Here’s hoping this problem doesn’t surface when Android 13 is released.
