TL;DR
  • Apple is announcing its latest hardware today, including the AirPods 5 series.
  • While we’ve had new Pro and Max models more recently, the base AirPods 4 launched all the way back in 2024.
  • Once again we’re getting two separate models, but now both with ANC.

Apple’s big hardware event is off to a strong start, already introducing us to the new iPhone 18 Pro series. Now it’s time to start getting into the accessories we’ll be using alongside those new handsets, as Apple unveils its new AirPods 5 series.

Just like last time around, Apple’s sharing two distinct models, but this time it’s not one with ANC and one without — active noise cancelation is now standard across the AirPods 5 range.

Even the base AirPods 5 will offer ANC, with pricing staying at $129. This model supports up to 4 hours of playback with ANC engaged, and the charging case can keep the music going for 20 hours. Compared to the AirPods 4, Apple says listeners can expect a 50% improvement in noise reduction, while still enjoying a comfortable open-ear design.

Instead of a separate ANC model, Apple’s bringing on-stem volume control from its Pro model down to a more affordable price point. For $149, you can grab the AirPods 5 with this on-device volume control, as well as a wireless charging case. These also push ANC duration up to 5 hours on a charge (22 with the case).

Both models benefit from a multiport architecture for improved acoustics, and employ Personalized Spatial Audio to really get you lost in the sound. Adaptive Audio lets users quickly transition between an isolated listening experience and activating Transparency mode when needed to interact with your environment.

Just like we saw on the AirPods Pro 3 last fall, the new AirPods 5 both support live translation capabilities. And no matter which you choose, you’ll be ready to tap into the power of Siri AI with just your voice.

As exciting as today’s launch is, though, arguably the highest-profile AirPods upgrade we’ve heard about in years is still not quite ready for prime time, as Apple’s rumored camera-equipped AirPods aren’t likely to debut until sometime next year — much like the base iPhone 18.

Pre-orders of both AirPods 5 models open today, ahead of retail availability getting underway on September 18.
