From Fairphone to Samsung and beyond, here are the most prominent announcements at IFA 2023.

September 1, 2023

IFA 2023 is being held in Berlin from September 1 to 5, giving tech media and the public an opportunity to see and try out the latest tech products. Last year’s show was the first one back following the Covid-19 pandemic, and we’re full-steam ahead with this year’s running.

What was announced at this year’s event, though? Here’s all the major news from the most prominent brands at the event.

What was announced at IFA 2023?

Loads of major brands attended IFA 2023, either with a direct presence or by holding an event on the sidelines. Here are some of the notable products announced at or around the show.

Fairphone

Fairphone has long offered ethically produced, repairable smartphones, and the Fairphone 5 is its most ambitious release yet. The phone has 10 modules that can be swapped out for easy repairs, support for five major OS updates, and at least eight years of security updates. The device also brings a mid-range Snapdragon chipset, a 90Hz OLED screen, dual 50MP rear cameras, and a removable 4,200mAh battery.

HONOR

HONOR officially opened IFA with its own keynote address, and it used the opportunity to reveal the HONOR V Purse. This is an out-folding foldable phone akin to the HUAWEI Mate XS, but HONOR says it’s meant to be worn like a purse. That’s thanks to purse straps as well as an always-on display showing purse patterns. The company also confirmed that its ultra-thin Magic V2 foldable will debut in global markets in Q1, some six months after the Chinese launch.

Lenovo

Lenovo is always a fixture at IFA and the 2023 running was no different. Unarguably its most prominent announcement was the $699 Legion Go handheld PC, a rival to the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. Expect a hefty form factor, an 8.8-inch 144Hz LCD screen, and detachable controllers like the Switch. It also announced the Legion Glasses (a portable display) and the Legion E510 wired earphones.

Samsung

The Korean brand used IFA 2023 to launch a so-called Samsung Food platform. This platform will be available on mobile, ovens, and refrigerators, and contains over 160,000 recipes. It will also allow you to plan meals, manage ingredients, and more. It also had several hardware announcements, such as the 98-inch Neo QLED 8K TV, a Disney edition Frame TV, the Odyssey Neo G9 gaming monitor, and a second-generation Freestyle projector.

Sony

Sony didn’t actually have a presence at IFA 2023, but nevertheless launched the £849 Xperia 5 V on the opening day of the event. True to the leaks, Sony has ditched the telephoto camera in favor of a dual rear camera setup. Otherwise, you’ve got some familiar specs here, like a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, 5,000mAh battery, 30W wired charging, 18W wireless charging, a 3.5mm port, and an IP68 rating.

TCL

TCL launched the €199 TCL 40 NXTPAPER just prior to IFA 2023, offering its NXTPAPER matte display tech on commercial phones. Yes, we said “phones” as the company is offering both a 4G and 5G model. The company also had a few other announcements on show, including a soundbar with Dolby’s FlexConnect tech, its RayNeo X2 AR glasses, and a QD mini-LED TV.

TECNO

Long-standing smartphone brand TECNO announced a couple of interesting products in Berlin. Perhaps the most notable reveal was the Phantom Ultimate rollable smartphone, going from a 6.55-inch screen to a 7.11-inch display with a button-press. The company also announced the MEGABOOK S1 Dazzling Edition concept laptop, which features a color-changing surface.
