Video: here’s Android 5.1.1 running on the Sony Xperia Z3

by: Bogdan PetrovanMay 15, 2015

Sony has already updated many of its smartphones to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but now we’re looking forward to the jump to 5.1 and a new video shows us what to expect.

The video from Chilean website Wayerless (via Xperia Blog) is a brief walk through the updated interface of what appears to be the Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603). Among the changes that we can spot are some new animations, flatter icons in the settings menu, the name change of the Walkman app to simply Music, and of course, the improved quick settings tiles that let you connect through WiFi or Bluetooth without going through the settings.

Sony began rolling out Lollipop to its devices in March, starting with the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Like with Samsung and HTC devices, the Android 5.1 update (released by Google on March 9) is expected to hit Sony devices this summer – in August, according to some reports.

Sony needs a way back into smartphone industry and I think timely updates are a great way to start the process.

A great start would be releasing products that actually compete. Every time I’ve thought of considering a Sony phone, someone releases a phone that’s 10x improved.

Release a product that can actually compete?

        You mean the Z3?

  • Kevin Ladhams

I hope this arrives soon, the 5.0.2 I have is quite buggy. Also just a quick note on the above, the Walkman app has already been changed to Music so you don’t have to wait for this update

Only got lollipop 2 weeks ago for z1 so can expect this next year?

Wow, that app opening speed! Is this real life?! Haha

    • That was pretty normal speed for such basic apps. And if they were in RAM, it was pretty slow. Galaxy S6 and One M9 run faster than this.

      • Svnjay

No, they aren’t. Sony’s skin is much lighter than Sense and Touchjiz.

        • Seb

I assume you have a s6 and an M9 with you ?? I have the s6 and it does open apps faster than this. So stop being silly and following stereotypes!!

          • Svnjay

The S6 opens apps quicker because it has a new processor. Was that so hard for you to figure out? It’s well known that TouchWiz is a bloated mess and Sony’s skin is the closest that you will get to stock Android.

          • Seb

Uhm.. excuse me my friend. But you just said the m9 and s6 did not open apps faster, and now you are saying the s6 does!

Also, did you happen to read the many many reviews of the s6 in which every single reviewer says touchwiz has been streamlined, and debloated quite a bit. Yes, it still has bloat! BUT so does every other android smartphone. So stop repeating the same shit over and over again saying touchwiz is a bloated mess, etc and inform yourself!!

          • Svnjay

The M9 appears to open them faster because there is no opening animation in Sense.

It has been debloated quite a lot but that doesn’t mean that it’s in the same league as stock Android and Sony’s skin which is almost identical to stock Android. There are also many reviewers who also say that TouchWiz still lags. Yes, TouchWiz is just too bloated to compete with Sense and Sony’s skin.

Ever since Walkman started updating from Play Store, it doesn’t have to do with firmware version anymore.

The Xperia Z3 is a more than decent smartphone, and one I’d happily carry around from day to day. It’s nicely designed, has great battery life and a lovely display.
