brothers a tale of two sons

Naturally, the pedant in me is quick to ask whether or not the subtitle is entirely necessary. I mean, if they’re brothers, don’t we kind of assume that they’re sons as well? You’re really just restating their familial status from a slightly different perspective. It really doesn’t add much additional context, now does it? You might as well make a game called Cat: the Story of a Feline. Ah, but anywho Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons has just arrived in the Play Store.

Title pedantry aside, this game is actually quite good. The story-driven little narrative follows the adventures of – you guessed it – two brothers who are – as it turns out – simultaneously sons. In fact, they are sons of a father who is at death’s door. With nothing but each other and a diagram of Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth at their disposal, the two must embark on a hero’s journey to claim the magic elix and return to save their father’s life.

The game was originally released for the Xbox 360 in 2013, but it has been streamlined and adapted for the mobile platform. If we’re honest, the controls are a little wonky, what with the dual virtual joysticks. That setup has never really been the best on mobile, but there aren’t many options for console ports. In spite of this, the story is top notch, with many game reviewers given Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons incredibly high praise. Some even said it moved them to tears, and the console version won more than 50 awards including Game of the Year, DICE, and BAFTA.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons can be yours for a steal at $2.99 in the Play Store. However, this is an introductory promotional rate, and it won’t last long. If you’ve been curious about this game and have been waiting around for it to drop price, you’re not going to find it cheaper than this.
