Android N emoji 2

Who needs words when you’ve got emojis, amirite? Good news: the world of emojis is now richer than ever with the all new Android 7.0 Nougat. Those weird but endearing blobs are now positively human characters, yellow is now just one of the many skin shades available, and the beloved fruit (or is it a vegetable?) that is avocado comes in the form of an emoji.

According to Emojipedia, we will see some significant changes in the emoji department with Android 7.0 Nougat. First is the elimination of the gender neutral look. Unicode recommends a gender-neutral appearance, and Google did exactly that on previous Android versions: we had jelly-bean-looking blobs with facial features, and there was simply no way of telling whether it was male or female.

As you can see, with Android Nougat, emojis that are supposed to be human characters are more human-looking. For instance, the cute blob with a police hat on previous versions is now a more clearly defined male police officer.

Although some may think it’s a shame that Google opted for gendered emojis this time around, it seems like Google has strategic plans for the future: back in July, Google proposed a new set of emojis that would subvert the gender norms associated within various emojis. This means that in the near future, we could see both male or female variants for each emoji.

Another substantial change brought by Nougat is the ability to change skin tones. This feature has been available on iOS for quite some time now, so it’s good to see Google following suit and supporting a more realistic depiction of humanity as well. Other major manufacturers should take note (I’m looking at you, Samsung).

Apart from these, there are quite a few completely new emojis that have been added. In fact, we see every emoji from Unicode 9.0 that was released back in June. These include some of our most cherished expressions, habits, and food: the idek shrug, the shameless selfie pose, and of course, the avocado.

You can see the full scope of changes on Emojipedia, but the rest are pretty standard. Google has streamlined some of the existing emojis to make them more consistent, and it also improved on some to make them look more realistic.

For instance, the new wine emoji that you see above is now much more wine-like. Cersei would be pleased.

These new cis gendered emojis trigger me, nah but In all seriousness I liked the blobs more, they were different

  • I. LIKED. MY. JELLYBEAN. DUDES.

Screw you, Millennials, and your PC needs.

    • I think it’s more inclusion than PC…

      • Johan

Is that not the same thing, though?

I am quite certain that the inclusion of everyone in everything is the very definition of “politically correct”.

Also, I do not see why something neutral would not be considered inclusive.
If anything, these new emojis are now only including people who identify with one of these genders. Thus excluding everyone else.

Which specific demographic do you mean a set of neutral emojis does not include?

I make approximately 6,000-8,000 bucks every month online. For anyone looking to do simple computer-based jobs for few hrs daily at your house and make decent income in the same time… Then this gig is for you… UR1.CA/pm79v

No it’s not. If you’re black and all human-shaped emojis are white, I doubt you feel comfortable using them.

But yeah, let’s not allow people to have options – only one, true color and one true emoji style, right ?

          • Johan

Are you sure you meant to write that to me and not someone else?

I am just curious, as your comment does not address anything that I have written.

    • Idiotbuster

So install a jelly bean dudes emoji pack and stop whining like a child… nobody is forcing you to use them and nobody is prohibiting you from using something else. Not to mention we’re talking about stupid emojis here… seriously DUDE, grow up and perhaps start typing instead of sending little picutres designed for children ?

      • Mmm, let your rage consume you. I love it!

  • Neel

DID THEY JUST ASSUME MY GENDER

  • Kevin Davis

What a joke. This must be the big news from 7.0,while we wait on 7.1 to actually bring some items of note.

Have you ran 7 on your device? Try before you reply mate. N is great. I’m beta from a loooong time back on every flavor. N rocks. The coding is getting very concise, like Mint Linux. Or, Windows 10. They’ve learned how to crunch code and get fast FINALLY. Samsung has the Note 7. #sigh# Why do they still exist. Lag lag lag lag piece of beautiful tech.

      • Have you used a Note 7? Try before you reply mate. Note 7 is great. I have been using an S7 Edge for a few months and it runs smooth as butter on a hot piece of toast.

        • ghostinrags

Boom! Damn. Recalls suck. ROFL! Dipshit.

          • really? You dug out a comment from 22 days ago to feel better and push your ego? Wow you are such a cool person your mom must be really proud of you.

    • ghostinrags

They’re under long press. Dumb, but not obtrusive. Dumb. Very very dumb. But, hey, at least they’re flying that flag.

  • Ethan Campbell

That first paragraph. It’s a fruit. It is definitely an abnormally Fatty fruit. Ask Google. It says fruit.

    • ghostinrags

Seriously. That’s your argument. Really. Jesus Christ. Go eat some guacamole. Shhhhhhh…

      • Ethan Campbell

        Fruit.

        • ghostinrags

          Pineapple.

  • NavyVeteran

Why does there have to be a consortium that has to approve of the emoji? It is stupid and not kosher.

    • ghostinrags

      Try guacamole. Repeat. Then… Hush.

  • Harshang Chhaya

dp5 and stable version can’t changes

  • Lapine

  • xgudwilx

    🖕🖕🏻🖕🏼🖕🏽🖕🏾🖕🏿 🖕🏼this add infested & laggy page!. Multi-race style.

  • Joseph

Does it really matter what I think when my phone’s manufacturer skins their own abominations over my jellybeans blobs?

  • I am sorry, but Stock Emojis, be it Android 6.x oder 7.x are still ugly as hell compared to iOS or the Samsung ones. Especially the “potatoe-heads” are fugly.

    • Modman

Wow people have a lot of time on their hands to worry about which emojis they have.

  • Choda Boy

Emojis are accelerating the Idiocracy of the world. Seriously, this is the equivalent for text messaging of the fast food picture menu. I have no idea what 98% of these stupid pictures are supposed to mean. They should have remained non-human, non-gender, non-racial, and non-political. Now, they have ensured that SOMEONE will be angry because the thousands of pictures do not exactly match who or what they are. This is a stupid, unwinnable pursuit.

    *poop emoji*

  • Peter

Who gives a damn about stupid emojis anyway… honestly, are we all 12 years old ?

  • Kody

Avocados are fruit. Why would you ever think it’s a vegetable?

  • Pieter Wycoff

I never could get used to the older emojii. I like the change.

  • s2weden2000

  • Those blobs were the butt of emoji jokes among iOS users.
