Next week, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Canonical will show the world Ub untu on Android, its next move in the strategy to expand the reach of Ubuntu Linux across multiple devices. The Ubuntu on Android project aims to unleash the computing power of modern smartphones, by enabling them to act as fully-fledged PCs. Just think about it. Any Tegra 2 device has enough brainpower to compete successfully with older laptops. And the upcoming quad-core chips will put even more computing oomph right into your pocket. So why not take advantage of your Android device and use it as …
The initial release of Chrome for Android raised mixed emotions from the public. While there were many who were pleased with the release, there were also quite a large number who voiced their disappointment for the missing features—including the desktop mode and full screen browsing, and perhaps even Flash. Previously, Google Chrome’s Senior VP Sundar Pichai has gone public by saying that these features are coming soon. Pichai has also promised that they will continue to make substantial improvements throughout the year. Still though, this is all understandable, because Google Chrome is still in Beta. Stay tuned to Android Authority and we’ll …
The last time we talked about the upcoming Android 5.0, we had received reports that speculated that Jelly Bean is supposed be released in the second quarter of the year, which is difficult to believe. As the days passed, we got to learn more information about this new iteration of Android. Rumors now suggest that Android 5.0 Jellybean is to gain a few elements of the Chrome OS so that it can be optimized for tablets. This, in turn, has led many to speculate that it will be dual-bootable with Windows 8. Today, we have learned something else about Android …
If you’re keeping tabs on what to expect at Mobile World Congress, we have new information for you! Less than a day after announcing two new ICS-running smartphones, ZTE ups the ante with the Mimosa X, a 4.3” device running on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 System-on-a-Chip . We have already seen many devices built around Nvidia’s dual-core architecture, but the Mimosa X is special in two significant ways. First, it holds the honor of being the first smartphone completely built on Nvidia silicon, sporting the Icera radio technology, which the Santa Clara-based giant acquired last year. Second, it’s the first phone that runs on Tegra 2 to target the mid-market, or, as Nvidia calls it, the mainstream buyer. ZTE …
After last night’s post on SmarTags app for the Sony Xperia S, we have even more exciting news for those waiting for the device (myself included). A few leaked photos of the device have been found by an Italian blog called Android HD blog. Sitting beside it is its smaller sibling, the Xperia U; which was previously called the Sony Kumquat. Compared with the Xperia S, the Xperia U still bears the name ‘Sony Ericsson.’ By now, you probably know that Sony Ericsson is no longer a unified brand. These devices are only called Sony now. Perhaps, Sony still plans …
As of the moment, there are only a small number of devices that are equipped with the official Ice Cream Sandwich build. But with several manufacturers starting to update their devices, this number will change by the second or third quarter of the year. One of the devices that’s getting the update is the Motorola Droid Razr. In fact, a DroidRzr forum user under the name of ‘dragon974’ has shared a series of screenshots with the public. Many believe that these screenshots are that of the final ICS build on the Droid Razr. The usual features found on the ICS …
One thing I really hate about signing up with a two-year contract is not being able to change my phone when a new one comes out; especially if it is a lot better than the phone I’m currently locked with. With all this talk about NFC capability, it is understandable why there are so many people who are getting interested in joining this bandwagon. But if you’re like me who has to wait for another couple of years before changing your phone, what do you do? Fortunately, Moneto has addressed an answer to us! Moneto has made near-field communication chips …
If you’re looking forward to using the current devices under the Sony Google TV line, you will be pleased to know that GTVHacker has given a root for them. The root, called ‘The GTVHacker Sony Recovery Downgrader & Rebooter,’ gives users the ability to root and run custom unsigned kernels on their Sony Google TV device. So what does this root really do? Even though it isn’t quick and easy, the root will convert your Sony Google TV (as well as your Google TV 2.0 powered Blu-ray player) into a custom kernel running machine. In layman’s terms, this will give …
[Updated: February 21st] The year 2011 was all about “dual core”, becoming the standard for high-end smartphones. And we just witnessed what superphones like the Samsung Galaxy S II, DROID RAZR MAXX, and others are capable of. These phones are five times more powerful than anything released last year, and for this upcoming generation of devices, even more. So, what next? This year, chip-makers have come forth with quad core processors supporting mobile multitasking comparable to the performance of a desktop computer of a few years ago, powered by Tegra 3 SoC’s and TI’s OMAP equivalent. More cores equal more …
Robot from BabyPips If you have a DROID RAZR, then good for you. Motorola has included one of the most useful apps, Smart Actions, to make life just a wee bit easier for the user. Basically, it allows the phone to perform certain actions when certain conditions are fulfilled. For example, you could set your phone to automatically switch to WiFi (Action) when you enter your home or office (Trigger). Or, you can change your sound profile to silent during your sleeping hours. Once you have set the triggers and actions, you don’t have to think about them again. What about …
The 16 GB Nook Tablet has received a fairly positive reception from the tech crowd when it was launched late last year. Many reviewers, including our own Lucian Armasu, noted that B&N’s slate is in many ways superior to its direct competitor, the Kindle Fire. Sales, too, have been brisk for the Nook Tablet, with an iSuppli report showing that Barnes & Noble sold a respectable 1.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012 (including the Nook Color). However, the Nook Tablet would fare much better if it weren’t for the price tag. B&N’s 16 GB slate is available at …
Galaxy. Note. Phablet. Phoneblet. Taphoneblet. Whatever it is, it certainly is something. Have you ever owned a tablet? How about a smartphone? Now, ask yourself – which one do you prefer? Truth is, the smartphone is as good as it gets. You certainly can’t bring your tablet everywhere, can you? Your smartphone though, on the other hand, goes everywhere with you like it’s attached to your body. Video Anyway, I just thought you might all appreciate knowing that the Galaxy Note is on sale at Amazon for only $249.99. Not too shabby! And, for those of you that don’t know, …
Android is already integrated in a wide range of devices besides the “conventional” smartphones and tablets that we know and love. The list of examples is long and includes home automation systems, various gadgets, appliances, and even vehicles. Google is a big supporter of this trend, having unveiled its Android @ Home initiative back in May 2011. Unfortunately, Google’s framework (based on Android and Arduino open source hardware) hasn’t produced yet any palpable results. All we have is a few cool concepts and ideas that everyone agree that should be transformed to reality, but no one dares to tackle. With …
Hey guys! I’m sure you’ve heard of a little device known as the Galaxy Note, right? No, you say? Where have you been? It’s currently one of our favorite devices on the market because of its gargantuan, brilliant HD Super AMOLED display, it’s powerful 1.4GHz Exynos dual core processor, and because there’s nothing out there like it. We’ve teamed up with Samsung for this awesome giveaway, and all you have to do …
