Android 4.4.2 (KOT49H) rolling out to Nexus devices

by: Bogdan PetrovanDecember 9, 2013

android 4.4.2

Dozens of users are reporting that they are receiving over the air updates to their Nexus devices.

The small update brings the firmware on the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (both generations) and the Nexus 10 to build number KOT49H. Just last week, Google released Android 4.4.1, an update focused on the camera performance of the Nexus 5; not all users received the 4.4.1 OTA yet, and it’s likely that 4.4.2 will roll out instead.

Here are the download links for Android 4.4.2 that are available at the moment of this writing:

You can flash these images using our sideloading guide here.

So far, the changelog for the OTA is pretty basic, but we’ll be able to tell you more once we get our updates:

  • Fix for clearing the VM Indicator
  • Fix for delivery of the VM Indicator
  • Various additional software fixes
  • Security enhancements

We’ll keep you posted.

Thanks, Raul!

  • Raul Nishii

    4.2.2 or 4.4.2 :)

    • Lisandro O Oocks

      I got 4.4.2 on Nexus 4

      • julio99

        so do I in Canada

  • Shark Bait

Say whattt?? i dont even have 4.4.1 yet? crazy things google

    • John Doe

      Me neither ..
Question: I got my Nexus 5 from Telus (Canada). Could Telus limit my
ability to get Android updates or do the updates still come straight from Google? Does Telus (or any carrier for that matter) need to test the OS updates for system carrier compatibility? or does that matter anymore?

      • Shark Bait

im not sure, the galaxy nexus was messed up by carriers but im not sure about the 5
Im from the play store, and havnt got the update yet so i wouldnt worry

      • Ris84

You will get it eventually. Nexus line always get updates, some faster and some not!

        • SSDROiD

Say that to the owners of the Galaxy Nexus. Your argument is so invalid Santa just hurt his ass falling off his sled.

      • districtjack

John Doe…a nexus does not get its updates from your carrier. On other phones the manufacturers do play with the update and add their own personal touch before releasing it to you. Lucky you because you own a nexus and it gets pure, clean, android.

      • Stefano Gigante

Once I read an “official” post. Google updates every device within its 18 months of shelf life, no matter who sells it.
However they first update a meager, random percentage of devices.
Then, if there are no troubles, they update the 25% of the active ones, then, in the next weeks, all the rest to completion.

Every device has a Play ID, so Google can randomly push updates on them. With 4.3 my Nexus 7 got 4.3 at day one, my 4 had to wait almost a month.

Currently my 4 got 4.4 after the first week and 4.4.2 5 hours ago, and my 7 got 4.4 a week ago, give or take, and it’s waiting 4.4.2

  • Pedro Alvarez

The title says 4.2.2, fix that :p

  • mark

    Love my nexus..

  • impulse101

Its 4.4.2 how many mistakes can you have all over this article? lol

  • nordel

Just got the 4.4.2 update OTA for my Nexus 5 after if checked for updates from the phone.

  • MasterMuffin

Damn that’s fast. It’s great that all Nexus users are paying for being beta testers :D

    • Ryster1

      :p I just wish I could get a single OTA update >:(

    • samsparkin

      Ur comments r best

    • ? Beta ? Nah, it is far better than beta ware. Mine works flawless. Beside we all bought nexi (nexus’) because we wanted quick updates, great price, stock(or at least easily romable) Android experience.

      • MasterMuffin

It’s still basically a beta. A certain group getting the latest so that Google can see the problems in it and fix them before most people get it :)

    • Valtheus

I guess always someone is gonna stay unhappy for some odd reason…

Some bitch that updates don’t come often in other brands, while others bitch that they do actually come faster than expected, feeling beta testers…

      Go figure…

      • MasterMuffin

Only one here bitching is you…

        • pleasespareit

No MasterMuffin, you’re actually bitching. Since when receiving an update is a beta? 4.4.1 didn’t break anything on my device, and 4.4 wasn’t broken to begin with. Even the voicemail stuff wasn’t broken. To me these fixes are nice improvements and I don’t feel like the software is in beta stage at all. Stop saying pathetic stuff and then attacking people when they voice their own opinion.

          • MasterMuffin

Your comment is so bad that even I feel bad. I made a joke and this guy attacks like that. When I reply him with the same attitude, suddenly I’m the attacker and idiot like you continues it also calling me pathetic. Also, when you ask that I let him voice his opinion, my comment is also my opiniom, let me voice it and go write that poop somewhere else, nobody needs it here…

          • Valtheus

So that was a joke? I guess you mean your opinion is a joke? I agree with ya… Oh wait, now i get it… hilarious… (eyes roll)

          • MasterMuffin

People like you are the lowest kinds of people online. Even trolls aren’t as bad, because they’re just having fun by annoying other, but you’re really just a douchebag. It’s sad that I can’t block people in Disqus, some people (cough you cough) just aren’t worth my time. Bye bye

          • Valtheus

          • pleasespareit

Cowards always say that they were just joking… I guess that makes you a coward, then.

          • MasterMuffin

as a final reply to you too (and as a combined reply to both of your replies):
            a) if you don’t understand what “:D” means, I’m shocked. I thought your IQ was over 10!
            b) he was clearly saying how I’m bitching. Work on your English perhaps?
            c) bye bye, unlike Valtheus you’re just a troll so I ain’t even mad. Just a stupid internet conversation :)

          • pleasespareit

I’m glad that my comment made you feel bad. That was my intention, so you just made me feel pretty good about myself. You ARE pathetic. He didn’t tell that anyone in specific was bitching, you on the other hand replied directly to him that he was. You made a personal attack, and that makes you a sorry little pathetic loser. I know that my comment sounds horrible and insensitive, but you deserve it. The guy said that generally you can’t please everyone, nothing else, and in return you’re calling him a bitch… I guess that makes it clear who’s the bitch here, it’s you. Bye bye, douche.

  • dim

My nexus 7 (2012) just updated!

  • Shubham Singh

lol..after the upgrade boot up it says “headphone disconnected”.

    • SSDROiD

I misread and thought you wrote “head disconnected”
Now that would have been an innovative update!

Has anyone received update for nexus 7 2012 hspa. I don’t see any mention for either 4.4.1 or 4.4.2

  • Johnny

My Nexus 5 hasn’t even gotten the 4.4.1 update. It must be one of the laziest Nexus’ around.

    • Warren Clarmont

I also haven’t even gotten the 4.4.1 update on my N5. Been waiting patiently and don’t want to sideload ;/

      • Arturo Raygoza

I thought I was the only one

        • Gaurav

Even I thought I a the only, What is the strategy for roll out’s??

          • SSDROiD

            The strategy:

Google Worker #1: “We’ll send updates to this area, this area and this area.”

            Google Worker #2:
            “What about this area?”

            Google Worker #1:
            “Fuck them”

          • Abdel Aziz Farhi

  • 0ThomasPaine0

  • Nathan Buffington

Best part about it is the black bars are removd don nexus 4! Except only on lock screen -__-

    • Daniel Reyna

quite the oposite, i see transparency on the lock screen only on my nexus 4

      • Nathan Buffington

Thats what I meant sorry for the bad spelling and grammar

  • just sideloaded took 5 min got tired of waiting for ota to 4.4.1 so skipped it to 4.4.2. Don’t be scared it is easy just do it all the cool kids are doing it. it doesn’t void the warranty and besides who’s gonna know. Don’t be a lamer with only 4.4, get your 4.4.2 fix it feels so good you know you wanna

    • RanRu

Fine, I’ll do it. But I won’t inhale!

    • mumusen

And it doesn’t wipe user data. So, it’s pretty safe IMO.

    • pleasespareit

      The Billy Mays of updates.

    • SSDROiD

“Don’t be scared it is easy just do it all the cool kids are doing it.”

By that reasoning, we should all smoke, have unprotected sex, do drugs, get expelled from school (or job), and ride a bike without a helmet.

      • Wow lack a sense of humor much. That was the point. It was written in jest.

        • SSDROiD

Oh come on, you can’t tell me that I can’t understand a joke when you didn’t understand mine! Mine may not have been as good of a joke as yours, but it was still a joke…

  • MadCowOnAStick

this sucks i’m still on 4.4 ;( and i’ve been staring at the check now punching it for a few days straight now lol

p.s. the link to the article is android 4-2-2 lol

    • SSDROiD

Hahahaha you just described my last couple of days!

  • Oli72

    My Nexus is waiting.

  • John

My Nexus 7 (2012) upgraded to 4.4.2 today.

  • Pranav Arora

Got directly from 4.4 to 4.4.2

  • Alvin Adiwira Santosa

Got the 4.4.2 earlier today. And I live halfway across the globe from US. in South East Asia to be exact. Not sure what’s changed.. Looks and feels the same to me..

    • Alex Graves

I’ve noticed that we no longer can turn off location service from Power Control widget. Instead, now we can only toggle battery saving or high accuracy mode.

      • Alvin Adiwira Santosa

That’s already been implemented since the 4.4 update

  • belle symbian

I got the 4.4.2 update for my nexus 7 2012 and the only change I noticed is the keyboard touch sound tone. It was like tick tick tick and now it’s like tok tok took.

    • podycust

also the status bars on the lockscreen are transparent, Miracast support (Cast screen in Display Settings) and fixes the bug on the lock screen music widget where if tried to seek through track it would jump to the last widget on lockscreen just to name a few things…

  • Jerrod

Just to let you know, the Nexus 5 link gives a 404 error.

  • Rachine S Vernon

My wife’s first gen N7 and my 2nd gen N7 are updating while I type this out. Maybe the new Netflix update will work now lol. Had to use an older version on my 2nd gen N7 in order to have Netflix work. It works flawlessly on my wife’s though.

    • SSDROiD

You have a wife AND you’re on the Internet? What kind of a godly figure are you?

      • Rachine S Vernon

        The nerdy kind lol.

  • Shreyas Sansuddi

Got the 4.4.2 update in India

    enough with the updates already!

    • SSDROiD

That’s the very first time I’ve ever seen an Android user complaining about receiving updates. Wow Android users are never happy. If people get multiple updates, they complain. If people don’t get an update, they complain. People are never happy, for fucks sake!

      • STRiKER

Dude u failed to catch the sarcasm. 4.4 isnt much of an upgrade over 4.3. Similarly, 4.4.2 isnt a remarkable add on to the 4.4.1 rollout. Why.not one update to capture everything at once? Updates look cool when they bring something visibly cool!

        • SSDROiD

With all due respect, sarcasm is difficult to detect on the Internet. I was actually convinced you really were sick of the updates. Speaking as someone who has a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 at 4.3 Jelly Bean and a Nexus 7 (2013) at 4.4 KitKat, I would love as many updates as they can give me. I think a lot of the reason they don’t wait to issue one major release might be because 1) people get impatient. 2) Some of the features they want to introduce don’t need bugfixing afterwards and they want users to get those advances, and 3) They need to release some of it in order to find errors and bugs easier. But regarding your last sentence regarding updates that are visibly cool, I completely agree!

  • SeraZR™

    Google’s releasing Nightlies XD

  • mumusen

We all lover our Nexus’ for getting quick updates directly from Google…most often without even knowing what good it is bringing. For instance, KitKat brought with itself great set of wakelocks.

  • Valtheus

Lock screen got the transparency feature in Nexus 7 (2013). I can only wonder why the desktop didn’t get it though.

  • GasparIPerez

And here I am, with my SGS3 i9305, still running 4.1.2. Much sad. Much outdated. Very Samsung. Wow.

    • SSDROiD

You’re calling Android 4.1.2 outdated? A lot of people are still stuck on Honeycomb! By the way, a part of the reason why Samsung doesn’t update its devices all the time is precisely because newer versions tend to have more bugs and bad things in them. Samsung is basically wanting you to have a more stable phone than Nexus users who need .1 and .2 for things to work correctly.

  • AndroidBrian

Anybody use the power control widget? They updated it, but for the worse. But when I click on location icon to disable GPS half the icon dims and GPS is still on.

    • 3v03duser

Same issue here on Nexus 5, it’s supposed to be a three way toggle, but mine only toggles two ways, between on and half-on. I would report the issue, but have no idea how to do so.

      • jim

Same issue on my nexus 4. Lame. Anyone know a fix?

    • HeyItsBob

If you disagree with Google’s popup then you get full on off toggle ability. I just found that out. I guess the half grey icon signifies Google is collecting data.

      • AndroidBrian

Yeah. Pretty stupid we have to disagree with that every time we turn on GPS .

  • LiiIiikEaBau5

I got 4.4.2 in Norway just a few minutes ago!

    • SSDROiD

I live in Norway and I got it just now. My Nexus really is lazy.

      • LiiIiikEaBau5

Mine got slower and camera got even slower (Nexus 4). Gonna buy Nexus 5!

        • SSDROiD

Hahaha, an update that made things worse! :P
I guess that is what they call a nightmare for the people with fear of change and thus don’t update anything.

  • slcoline

My husband and I both have the Nexus 5 and neither one of us have received the any updates at all. Sadness.

  • Sebastian Linnemann

Is anyone having issues with maps since upgrading to 4.4.2 on nexus7 2013wifi? Or have I messed with my settings too much?
