TL;DR
  • Monthly Amazon Prime subscription prices have gone up from $10.99 to $12.99.
  • The special monthly student price for Amazon Prime is also going up from $5.49 to $6.49.
  • The increases are immediate for new users, while existing subscribers will see prices go up after Feb. 18.
  • Amazon Prime Video monthly fees remain the same at $8.99.
  • The best deal will remain paying for a full year’s service at once, at $99 (vs a total cost of around $156 if paid monthly).

If you are a monthly subscriber to Amazon Prime, you may want to consider switching over to the annual price point for the retailer’s special service. Amazon quietly raised the monthly Amazon Prime subscription prices today from $10.99 to $12.99. That means that if you stick with the service for a year at the montly rate, you will pay $24 more than before, for a total price of about $156.

That certainly makes signing up for the Amazon Prime yearly subscription much more attractive. As Recode reports, it will be staying at $99 a year, so the overall savings are even bigger than before. If you are a student, your monthly Amazon Prime costs are going up as well, from $5.49 to $6.49, but the yearly cost will remain the same at $49.

Both of these monthly price changes will go into effect immediately for new customers. Existing monthly subscribers will see the price go up on their renewal date after Feb. 18. If you have signed up for the monthly Amazon Prime Video subscription, don’t worry; it will remain the same at $8.99 a month.

These price increases for monthly Amazon Prime users make it look like the retailer really, really wants customers to switch over to the yearly subscription model. Paying $99 a year for free-two day shipping on millions of items, or free same day shipping in some locations, makes it worth that price alone if you order a lot from Amazon. It also still includes access to Amazon Prime Video, with thousands of free movies and TV shows, including Prime originals like The Grand Tour and the recent Golden Globe winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

You can also get special discounts at Amazon’s Whole Foods grocery stores, discounts for Amazon Music Unlimited subscriptions, access to a selection of free ebooks and magazines, and more with Amazon Prime. It even offers big discounts on a number of unlocked Android phones for Prime members. The retailer has not revealed just how many users have signed up for the service, although some analysts believe that Amazon Prime has over 60 million subscribers.
