  • Xiaomi will pack a liquid lens on the new Mi Mix.
  • The company claims it has an optical structure just like the human eye.
  • The lens will enable both telephoto and macro shots.

Xiaomi is launching a new Mi Mix on March 29, and the company has started teasing some of its unique features. Interestingly, the latest Mi Mix will carry a liquid lens, a first in the smartphone world.

A liquid lens contains an optical-grade liquid and is controlled either mechanically or electronically. Unlike traditional lenses that are rigid, liquid lenses are tensile and can quickly change the focal length. They also take up less space compared to a traditional lens.

According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, the company’s self-developed liquid lens will be controlled through a motor to achieve precise and rapid focusing. The flowable liquid that makes up the lens will be wrapped by a film enabling the quick change of focal length and focus.

Xiaomi compares it to how the human eye sees. The deformation speed of the liquid lens, Xiaomi says, is much faster than the mechanical controls of a traditional optical lens, greatly improving focusing speeds.

Jun also revealed that the lens would enable both macro as well as telephoto shots.

Additionally, Xiaomi claims that the optical fluid has high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion, and resistance to extreme environments.

So are you excited to check out the first phone with a liquid lens? We also hear that the new Mi Mix is a foldable device. What are your thoughts on that? Let us know in the comments section below.
