TL;DR
  • You can now start a chat with yourself on WhatsApp.
  • The feature can be useful for saving information or sharing files with yourself across your linked devices.

WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature that lets you message yourself. According to WaBetaInfo, the new ability to send yourself WhatsApp messages is now available on iOS with version 22.23.74 of the app. On Android, the feature is available to some with version 2.22.23.77 of WhatsApp.

Why would you need to text yourself on WhatsApp? Well, many people find it useful to quickly jot down an idea, a reminder, or paste a link from the web in a message to themselves. The feature can also be handy for sharing files with yourself from one platform to another. For instance, you could WhatsApp yourself an image from your phone and download it on your desktop with the PC version of the messaging app.

Messaging platforms like Slack already allow users to message themselves. Telegram also lets you save messages for later or create a private channel where you can keep messaging yourself. WhatsApp seems to have taken note of what its competitors are doing by finally adding the new feature.

So how can you go about sending yourself a message on WhatsApp? Simply open a new chat, and when you’re selecting a contact to message, you’ll see your own contact right at the top of the list. Additionally, a different chat caption shows up when opening this chat — “Message yourself.”

Messages sent to yourself will be visible across all your linked devices. WhatsApp will also maintain end-to-end encryption on these chats.

If you can’t see the feature right now, you may have to wait for a few more days for WhatsApp to complete the rollout.
