Phone showing Breezy Weather app on F Droid

Add Android Authority on Google:

Sometimes the reason for choosing a weather app can be as fickle as the weather itself: it’s the nicest-looking one in the Play Store, the widget for it lets you make decisions about your outerwear at a glance, or it’s the default one that came with your phone and you don’t want to spend time evaluating any others.

There’s a lot at stake when you plan your day based on whether there’s a smiling sun or a sad rain cloud on your screen, so we wanted to hear from readers. That’s why we polled you to find out whether you’ve stuck with the default weather app on your phone, downloaded something else, or are braving the elements sans app.

The majority of the 2,535 respondents, at 53.5%, use the weather app that was preloaded on their phone. That means most are checking Pixel Weather, Samsung Weather, and the like daily.

Those who’ve ventured into the wide world of weather apps on their own account for 43% of respondents. That means they had to choose from the literally thousands of weather apps on the Play Store and beyond. Favorites among Android Authority staff include Breezy and MeteoCompare.

Lastly comes the most intriguing result with the people who do not use a weather app, which make up 3.5% of those we heard from.

We needed to know more about them and everyone else who answered. Fortunately, some provided us with comments.

There’s Keith who reinforces that mom always knows best:

My weather app is located in my contacts. I text my elderly Mom who watches the local news and ALWAYS has a more accurate forecast than I do. You guys should try it. Setup a shortcut to one of the old people in your lives on your home screen. Weather apps suck. I don’t care how pretty they might be.

Not everyone can be Keith, or reader Michael Detwiler who has his own personal weather station:

I use a paid version of the National Weather Service app (NOAA Weather) as I have my own personal weather station. It gives me the actual forecasts made by actual people from the NWS office for my area.

Alistair Parsons likes one of our faves, Breezy:

I changed to breezy few weeks ago, very detailed and much nicer than so many others, and I’ve tried probably more than 20.

And sometimes too many apps are the same as no apps, as chrisheyde proves:

All of this is actually irrelevant to me. I just wish the predictions were more accurate. None of the apps are even close half of the time. I head out, check several apps, they all say something different, all are wrong and I end up wet, hot and always under or over prepared. Just easier to look out the window and guess.
