When Pokémon Go launched in July 2016, many thought it would start a trend for smartphone-based augmented reality games. However, the popularity of Pokémon Go didn’t spawn a lot of new AR games. Now it looks like developer Next Games believes that people will use their smartphones to kill hordes of digital zombies in real world locations with the upcoming release of The Walking Dead: Our World.

Based on the AMC TV show version of the popular zombie franchise, the game is supposed to let players fight zombies wherever they might be in the real world. A trailer for Our World doesn’t actually show real gameplay, but it gives an idea of what we might expect. Players will be able to get a hold of guns, swords, and grenades, among other weapons, by using their smartphone to find them in the real world, and then use those weapons against the digital undead. You will also get some help from virtual versions of The Walking Dead’s many TV show characters (yes, that includes Daryl Dixon and his handy crossbow).

Next Games previously developed and released another Walking Dead title, No Man’s Land, which was more of a traditional strategy-action mobile game. While they do have experience in making games for this franchise, an AR-based first-person action title is much different than a top-down strategy game. We will have to see if they can make that jump to the AR space.

There’s no release date yet for The Walking Dead: Our World, other than “coming soon”, but we would bet that the game might launch around the time the show’s eight season makes its debut on October 22.
