It may just be a rebranded Baro, but could Suunto spring a surprise?

TL;DR
  • A new Suunto watch has appeared on the FCC.
  • Titled the Suunto 9 Peak, it’s seemingly a companion model to the Suunto 9 Baro from 2019.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Suunto smartwatch make its debut. Now, a new model has popped up at the FCC, dubbed the Suunto 9 Peak.

Bearing the model number OW194, the Peak is seemingly an upcoming addition to the premier Suunto 9 line. But the FCC listing doesn’t do much to set it apart from its siblings. In terms of aesthetics, the Suunto 9 Peak wears a similar bezel and button layout as the Suunto 9 Baro. However, one key difference is the use of a more pliable strap instead of a silicone option.

As for specs, it shares multiple skills with the Baro, too. The Peak sports weather functionality with a built-in barometer, 100m water resistance, a sapphire glass face, and built-in navigation smarts to boot. It also features intelligent battery management, onboard GPS, and tracking for over 80 activities and sports.

Beyond the model number and strap tweak, it’s unclear what the unique selling point of the Suunto 9 Peak could be. Notably, the last time the Peak nomenclature appeared in Suunto’s lineup was the Ambit 3 Peak from 2014. It remains a pretty popular fitness watch in the Finnish firm’s lineup despite its monochromatic display.

Suunto’s last notable smartwatch came in the form of the Suunto 7. That device packed Wear OS, a lengthy battery life, and excellent GPS tracking for an outdoor watch.

There’s no indication when we’ll see the Suunto 9 Peak make its official debut, but its recent stroll through the FCC suggests its arrival may not be too far away.
