What is Star Trek: Lower Decks?
The show is the first official Star Trek animated sitcom. It was created by Trek fan Mike McMahan, a former writer for Rick and Morty and the co-creator of Solar OPPOsites for Hulu. This series examines the characters who are on board the Federation starship USS Cerritos. For you continuity buffs, Lower Decks takes place a few years after the series finale of Star Trek: Voyager.
The twist is the main characters of this show are not the captain or the bridge crew of this ship. Instead, it focuses on a group of lower-ranked crewmen who still have to deal with various alien and internal issues. The first episode that’s available to watch for free, “Second Contact”, introduces us to the main cast members, including Ensign Tendi, who is coming on board the Cerritos and meets up with the three other regular characters, Ensign Mariner, Boimler, and Rutherford. The episode shows how Mariner and Boimler have to take on a side mission on the recently contacted planet Galar. Meanwhile, Tendi and Rutherford have to deal with a serious crisis on board the ship.
We have already been told that some characters from previous Trek series will be popping in future episodes. Star Trek: Lower Decks will drop a new installment weekly on CBS All Access for its 10-episode run. It’s already been renewed for a second season for 2021.
