We all want fast updates for our phones, but OEMs have to walk the fine line between offering the fastest rollouts and ensuring that software is free of any major bugs. And sometimes things just don’t work out: case in point, Sony pulled the Marshmallow update for the Canadian versions of the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium due to a bug preventing users from accessing Google Play.

The bug, as documented on Sony’s support forums, made it impossible to use the Play Store, due to persistent crashes. None of the usual fixes – clearing the cache, rebooting, etc. – worked, and Sony ended up recommending users to wipe the device and reinstall the software using its PC Companion utility. Some users reported that a factory reset did the trick as well.

Turns out the issue was serious enough for Sony to pull the plug on the rollout for the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact. The update began rolling on March 23, and Sony halted it just three days later.

According a moderator on the Sony support forums, the problem is not limited to the Xperia Z5 series.

We’ll let you know when the update resumes. Have you encountered any issues with your Xperia phone after the Marshmallow update?
