Sony skipped its "compact" variant of the Xperia XZ3, but now it appears there will be a Sony Xperia XZ4 Compact.

TL;DR
  • Some new renders of the Sony Xperia XZ4 Compact from trusted leaker @OnLeaks just hit the internet.
  • Sony’s “compact” series of variants are smaller versions of its flagship devices.
  • Notably, Sony skipped a compact version of the Sony Xperia XZ3, but apparently, it will not skip it for the XZ4.

Trusted leaker @OnLeaks just pushed out some new renders of the Sony Xperia XZ4 Compact (via XDA Developers). It was only a little over a week ago that we saw leaked renders — also from @OnLeaks — for the vanilla Sony Xperia XZ4.

Sony’s “compact” variants of its flagship smartphones are notably smaller and less-fully featured than the main line. While this might seem like a peculiar strategy (and the opposite of what most brands do), in a market where pretty much every flagship phone is enormous, there are certainly plenty of folks out there who are clamoring for a phone that’s just a bit smaller.

Both the Sony Xperia XZ1 and the XZ2 had Compact models, but for some reason the Sony Xperia XZ3 did not. Sony, apparently, is pulling back on that decision to eliminate the Compact variant, because…well, here we are.

Check out the images and 360-degree video of the Sony Xperia XZ4 Compact below:

The renders don’t give us any ideas about specs for the Xperia XZ4 Compact, but we can tell a little bit about it. For example, there’s a single camera sensor on the rear, which the main XZ4 isn’t likely to have (it likely has three sensors). There also doesn’t appear to be a rear fingerprint sensor, which likely means the XZ4 Compact has a side-mounted sensor, just like we assume the XZ4 will have.

What do you think? Are you a smartphone buyer looking for small(ish) phones? Are you glad the Compact line is coming back? Let us know in the comments!
