Watch Sony detail all the Xperia 5 II's features in a leaked video

The video more or less lays out everything there is to know about the Xperia 5 II.

  • Leaker Evan Blass shared a new video detailing the Sony Xperia 5 II.
  • The footage corroborates a lot of what we already knew about the phone, but it also gives us a better look at the device’s software.

Over on YouTube, veteran leaker Evan Blass has shared a new promotional video he says Sony will release on September 17, the same day the company plans to announce the Xperia 5 II. The clip mostly corroborates earlier information Blass shared about the device, but we also see some features in more detail.

The video starts by showcasing the Sony Xperia 5 II’s primary cameras. We see the phone’s 24mm, 16mm, and 70mm lenses with 35mm-equivalent focal length cameras. Thanks to an image Blass shared at the end of August, we know they’ll feature ƒ/1.7, ƒ/2.2, and ƒ/2.4 aperture lenses.

However, the more exciting showcase is the software. Borrowing a page from its excellent Alpha-series mirrorless cameras, it looks like the Sony Xperia 5 II will feature real-time eye-tracking when you point the camera at both humans and animals. On Sony’s cameras, eye-tracking makes it easy to nail focus on your subject consistently. We’ll need to see if the feature is as consistent on the Xperia 5 II. Toward the latter half of the video, Sony also advertises the phone’s low-light capabilities, but doesn’t provide details on the specific enhancements.

When taking pictures, you’ll also have access to a 20-frames-per-second burst mode that can automatically adjust the camera’s focus and exposure between shots. When it comes to video, meanwhile, the promo says the Xperia 5 II will support 4K video capture at 120fps with HDR enabled. Again, we’ll need to see this functionality work in practice, but it promises to allow Xperia 5 II users to take crisp slow-motion footage.

As you might imagine, Sony is also happy to spend ample time highlighting that the Xperia 5 II includes a headphone jack, a feature that’s been missing from most high-end phones for a while now. Similarly, it spends some time playing up the fact that the phone comes with its suite of proprietary audio codecs, including DSEE and LDAC. There’s also a brief mention of the phone’s front-facing stereo speakers, which is one of those features that’s become rare as manufacturers have done away with screen bezel.

To complement the Sony Xperia 5 II’s 120Hz refresh rate, it looks like Sony plans to include a couple of gaming-related software enhancements. We saw one screenshot of the gaming mode when Blass shared photos of the phone partway through August, but here we get a more detailed look at all the settings you’ll be able to toggle. The last notable thing we see is that the phone will feature a 4,000mAh battery. For context, the Xperia 5 includes a 3,140mAh battery, so the Xperia 5 II is getting a significant upgrade in that department.

We’ll have more on the Xperia 5 II when Sony announces it on September 17.
